I'm currently working my way through UY. It's still amusing and certainly better than her Inuyasha dog crap. I'd probably say it's Oshii's doing though.

It helped but Oshii left about half way. Probably for the best as he was taking it to places way deeper than ever intended. Yamazaki took over and began following the manga a bit more, and it was still an awesome series. Though he had his "love letter" to fans in "Lum The Forever", which essentially was telling them to get a life.

The manga itself is fantastic and her best work along with the Mermaid Saga. If you like the anime, you'll like the manga, though the anime had plenty of great original stories. Shame Viz never finished it, and the fansite that did is long gone.

I was just saying how it was about time new UY was made, with new Ranma as a bonus. Wonder if we'll ever see these stateside.

So.... I'm guessing since it's an event only exclusive, we won't be seeing it released on any DVD or portably watchable format in any country, any time soon?

That actually..... sucks. Especially since the only latest Rumiko offerings we have in the states is still that awful Inuyasha crud.

That's especially sad in the case of Ranma 1/2, because it's distribution in the US in the 90's was closer to being a mainstream hit here than it was on television in Japan, where it got consistently dull ratings, and canceled before getting a true ending.

So, Japan gets a new Ranma 1/2 but you have to go to the event to see it, and America is snubbed? Kinda unfair.

Then again, UY was Rumiko's #1 masterwork and even better than Ranma 1/2 and has sadly, gone largely unappreciated in the west.

I guess the Rumic World has a lousy international export policy, after all.

Not necessarily. MS Igloo was produced for a museum in Japan, and that got a DVD release, a OAV sequel and a US release.

It's a wait and see kind of thing. The titles are rather obscure here nowadays, and Inu Yasha's popularity isn't what it once was, no matter the perceived quality (I actually like it quite a bit, though it is my least favorite of her works).

You might want to read about it... animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-08-02/new-ranma-short-debuts-at-takahashi-tokyo-event

The Ranma special is one of the stories that wasn't animated, same goes for the Inuyasha special.

I wonder how much they spent on the production of these specials (Ranma, Inuyasha and now Urusei Yatsura) because these were made for the exhibit (limited audience).
I really hope they make these specials available on DVD sometime in the future.

The bits that were translated are the best bits; there's a patch around v13 or so that's rather too Ryuunosuke-centric, and manga-Ryuunosuke really doesn't come across as a compelling character, IMO.

Ryuunosuke is ALWAYS compelling to me.

Viz left A LOT of it unfinished. They only got a third of the way through, and stopped right as the series was hitting it's stride. I have some of the fan work. Trust me, Viz left out quite a few of the best bits. Wink Not to mention the fact that you can't even find what relatively little they did release nowadays.

As for Ryuunosuke, she had a lot of potential, but even the anime was rather cold to using her.

I'd like it to get a net-cast like those Jump anime, but there's not enough fans in America for it to happen. *sigh*

In that case, you may want the french edition released by Glénat, which is complete (lousy covers, though).
