I love Hokuto no Ken. It's part of the reason I became a collector. Retsuden was, for some odd reason, very difficult to find. For me anyway. It was not until the "Sega the Best" greatest hits version came out, is when I could actually claim a copy.

I still can't wait for the day when I get my hands on the Atomiswave. There are so many hardcore games on that (arcade) board.

Todd: Your X button title Metal Storm, got me lookin around the page for the old NES game, man.

The problem with Brutal Legend is that no matter how awesome everything else is, those messy RTS battles just bring my motivation crashing down and I am unwilling to keep playing the game...

Tim Shafer, please get rid of this RTS element or make it PURELY part of the multiplayer component next time IF you do a sequel. I love the game, but I cannot play it because I can't stand doing one more ****ing RTS battle...

You should review Uncharted 2 for your next non anime game review.

I'm really glad to see Brutal Legend getting good press as a whole, for Tim's sake. (Seriously, all you slackers who never bought Psychonauts, go and snap this off the shelves. Razz) If I actually had a 360 or PS3, I'd be all over it myself. Ridiculous over-the-top art stylings + Jack Black zaniness + brutal metal soundtrack? Yes please.

Amusingly enough, this is just about the first game featured by this column that I've had any real interest in playing. I'm not generally a fan of anime-based games or RPGs in the least. I'd wonder why I've been reading the column so vigilantly since it began, but Todd's writing style doesn't let me stop laughing long enough to do so. Very Happy

the review of Brutal Legend is pretty much what I think of the game; it's definitely got its gameplay flaws, but there's just so much personality and heart to i that it's kinda hard to hate it without looking like a jerk. I'll gladly take it over any of these brown sequels publishers like Activision keep farting out year after year. Weirdly I never had trouble with the stage battles (though I had a tendency to use the "steamroll" strategy)

Good review of Brutal Legend. I still need to get my hands on it. It may have its flaws but I can't say no to a game that is so metal.

If I may say one thing though: Rob Halford is the current, not former, frontman for Judas Priest. He did leave them in 1991 but returned in 2003.

Don't suppose you've seen this on Adult Swim.

Grim Fandango is probably the only point-and-click adventure that didn't force me to look the solution up. Then again, I don't play a lot of those games for that reason... Tim Schafer has Psychonauts going for him as well, which had rather lame gameplay, but great atmosphere and humor.
And yes, Valkyrie Profile has a lot of problems, but god do I love it!

Whaddya mean, Fist of the North Star is GAY? There's a WOMAN in it! See, she's right there, next to the guy with the HUGE pectorals just SPURTING white streams of pure MANERGY all over the place.

I almost died laughing reading that... partly because I have made an almost identical statement about DBZ.

Wow have to admit, seems like slim pickings in the gaming industry with this latest article. Maybe I’m just being negative though.

Believe it or not Todd, you’re actually the first person I’ve seen say something like that about Valkyrie Profile. The game is worshipped as one of the best RPGs of a bygone era to date, but I guess even for all its merits, it had its flaws. Most people complain the English acting was bad, for example, but they fail to realize that it was really good. Of course this is a case of Japanese only for some freaks, but whatever. The game did suffer from bugs too (like the infamous Great Magic one in the A ending route).

I liked your clever quip about Atelier Annie. I bet most people never thought about what atelier actually means Anime hyper

Personally I thought the guy who did Kenshiro in the PS2 fighting did a good job. His "ATATATATATATATA"-ing was very good imho.

I hope to get a PS3 in the near future so I may play the new Hokuto game Smile

Fist of the North Star is a bit more complex than most of its low-effort spin-offs, but it's still not a game to be played at high-level tournaments by people who care about that sort of thing.

Wow its going to be a shock to the guys at SBO that they arent considered a high-level tournament or perhaps its coincidence that HnK was included in the line-up on two separate occasions?

Badman was the perfect d/l title. Not sure why NISA wants to push the UMD release, but they seem to like the idea.

Rhapsody was a great game (on the PS1, at least), but I think the similarities end there with Atelier Annie.
Princess Antiphona’s Hymn: Angel’s Score Op.A, also by NIS, is more of a spiritual successor to Rhapsody and I hope NISA plans on announcing it soon.

I wish we'd get a English-texted Japanese-audio DS version of Puppet Princess 2, the PS1 sequel to the original game that became Rhapsody. I liked the DS version of Rhapsody, fully aware that the battle system was simplified into an easy Final Fantasy clone, and would like to see more games like it, so I may get Atelier Anne. It'll be on my Christmas list, at least.

Imagine Carl Macek localizing Arc's Hokuto no Ken.
"Say your goodbyes, lard-ass, because you're already dead. AAAAAH!"
Tch, what a waste.

But seriously, I'm glad to hear Tim Shafer is still making games after the disastrous sales of Psychonauts. Coverage on a video game auteur is always welcome. Now if only if Brutal Legend starred Black Jack instead of Jack Black...
