Many art films do have a ton of sex/violence, though. Contempt, one of Godard's best films, has some gratuitious nudity. And Salo; oh, Salo. Sick movie.

That's a stupid comparison: Evangelion has (for the most part) fanservicy sex that's supposed to tittilate the viewers. On the other hand, NO ONE ENJOYS THE SEX IN SALO. At least I hope not *shudders*

I agree with Zac, Eva is actually pretty simple, it's just presented in an overly complicated manner. I can't stand to watch the TV series anymore, Anno was so obviously making up the conspiracies as he went it's embarassing. And the scene where the Hallelujah chorus plays during spoiler[Asuka's mind-rape] has absolutely no subtelty. In my opinion, Evangelion would have worked a lot better if it wasn't a mecha show, as a lot of my complaints stem from Anno's inability to combine giant robots with the ideas he was trying to present. I'd like to see him go back and deal with the same themes again sometime, but without the giant robots. I prefer my giant robot cartoons to be stupid and fun, not whiny things that hurt my head.

I'm hard pressed to remember any actual fanservicy sex in in Eva. Fanservicy teasing is another matter. And the erotic nude scene at the beginning of Contempt was added for purely fanservicy reasons, but I don't know of anyone who seriously thinks this undermines the film.

Sure, Eva has some comical teasing, but when it really deals with sexual longing it does so meaningfully and tastefully. I wonder how many people read all the prudish complaints about fanservice in Eva, then check out the series in (dashed) hopes of seeing porn?

And complaining about the lack of subtlety in the Halleluia scene is like complaining about the lack of realistic figure drawing in an Oliphant caricature.
