The population for those countries obviously don't speak English as their first language, but I wonder, perchance, what their most common second language might be? (PROTIP: English.)

Expanding on the above quote from Hey, Answerman, many countries in Asia (and other parts of the world) has English as one of their official and/or national language. This includes India, Pakistan, Singapore and Philippines.

Countries that were once part of the British Commonwealth or colony such as Malaysia and Hong Kong had at one time English as one of it's official or national language. And it is still commonly used and spoken.

For some, if English is one of the official language of those countries, it is also their first language, i.e. English-schooled and spoken at home.

From the question about DVD releases of Crunchyroll shows:

Quote:
The only one that I can recall off the top of my head, aside from shows that already had DVD releases in store like Naruto, has been Gintama.

Poor Neo Angelique Abyss. No one ever seems to remember it was (and for that matter still is) available on Crunchyroll prior to its license by Sentai23 in 2009 and its January 2010 release.

Oh wow, where to start...

@ JJ: Um... what?

First off, I don't read Japanese, but even I know when a translation's wonky. Scanlations are far more hit and miss than the official translation (unless it's Tokyopop...) - there's some groups that are good, and some that are bad. But hey, it's free right? Who cares.

Obviously, when you're slapping money down on something, you want a good translation and - hey, guess what? The official translation is usually the better one. Viz has always done a perfectly good job with One Piece. Just because it isn't the translation you're used to doesn't make it bad.

Second: All North American manga releases are printed LARGER than the original Japanese tankobons. And here's a shocker - the Japanese don't print the color pages in color in the tanks either. You only get color pages if you buy the original magazine. Any lackluster covers you've run across are almost always the original covers, and the paper quality is about the same.

If you think they should mass produce manga on glossy paper, I invite you to go down to Kinko's and print a 200 page book on premium paper and report back as to how much that costs. ESPECIALLY how much it costs to print full color on cover stock/cardstock.

And, if you want the manga cheaper (I actually can't think of anything that costs $15 offhand... the most expensive manga I ever bought was $10) you can always buy the Japanese release. They're only $3 or $4 if you've got a Japanese bookstore near you. And, as I said, they're smaller than the American release, and printed on the same paper. They still come with stickers and stuff though. Of course, that WOULD mean you'd have to learn Japanese...

Good sir. Please refrain from making all the weeaboos cry. Naturally, the Japanese releases are ALWAYS better. Razz

If you don't have a place nearby that stocks manga in Japanese, try this place: http://www.sasugabooks.com/

They're close by to where I live but no longer have a store front...

I loved the cartoon. I'd love to see more!

Keep up the good work, in any case!

Whelp... that hentai list was.... educational. Of course half of them would be self explanatory if they used the English name for it. Still.. edumacationmanal.

Nyotaimori. So thaaaaat's what it's called.

Also, now I'm morbidly curious about these Animax Asia English dubs.

I used to go to their Cambridge store in Porter Square all the time. I hear their Watertown location, which is also their warehouse, may sometimes be open on like a Saturday, but I've yet to check it out or really check how it works.

The original Evangelion, hands down. It was going so well then literally disintgrated on the run. I haven't seen any of [not] series yet, soon I hope, but it has a lot of damage repair to do before it will ever heal the wound of mistrust the original gave me.

Hah! I pulled out random volumes of my collection for comparison. Since pictures speak louder than words and all.

Also, I find that the paper in the original Japanese tankobons tend to yellow faster - being that they are printed on cheat newpaper quality paper after all.

Hey, back in the day before the boom manga USED to be priced around 15.95+/- Rolling Eyes

PHOTOSHOPPED!!! OMG. Japanese releases are always the best quality everrr!!! If they turn yellow, that means they're even better. It's like alchemy!!!

But really, just kidding. I'm very satisfied with most North American manga releases. I am especially a fan of the when series are released in over sized editions. It's nice seeing the art work a bit bigger and generally a little closer to the size of the original art (before they shrink it for most published releases).

I spent the vast majority of my time in work today thinking about what the most dissapointing anime I've ever seen is (which is kind of sad but let's just ignore that) and mentally preparing a long speil about it in case anyone ever asks me online.

So I'm all set for this week's answerfans Cool

(BTW the anime is Gunslinger Girl).

I also want to comment briefly on the replies Brian posted to last week's question, since this is something that's also been on my mind a lot.

As of late I'm seeing alot of a particular opinion online, which can basically be summed up as "Anime/manga/video games aren't good enough so I'm justified in stealing them".

Even assuming for a minute that the claims about fan efforts being better than official ones are accurate (more on that below) that view is still nonsense. You are perfectly entitled to not spend your money on something if you don't like it. You aren't entitled to violate copyright laws.

As to the supposed superiority of scanlations, I get the feeling a lot of the people making these claims don't actually read official releases. I'm not saying their aren't quality efforts out there or that the fans aren't giving it their all, but the fact of the matter is that enthusiasm and burning passion do not automatically make for a good product. In my experience the difference in quality between scanlations and official translations is night and day, and not in a way that's favourable to the fan projects.

My most disappointing manga...oh man, I can't even mention it, it's so embarrassing. I wanted to burn it. But I kept it, as an example to myself of what NEVER to do, again.

Oh man, the comic this week was absolutely hilarious.

Disapointing anime? Toss up between Gundam Seed Destiny, Digimon Frontier and Dragonaut: The Resonance.

I'm gonna say Dragonaut. At least I finished those other two when I started watching them. Dragonaut is probably the worst anime of all time to me.

I'm guessing the comment about Haruhi sales saving anime was tongue-in-cheek, both praising and condemning the crowds the fansubs were getting.

Actually, there have been quite a few shows that have gone from streaming on Crunchyroll to a DVD release.

Gintama
Sora no Otoshimono
Neo Angelique Abyss
Blassreiter
Glass Mask
Linebarrels of Iron
Tower of Druaga

I think that's it so far.
