Obvious he's trolling.

Took the bait.

I find the problem is getting hold of older series that aren't on streaming sites. Also alot aren't available to people outside the US or at least they limit what you can view.

I do feel for some of my friends who can't afford to buy anime all the time, but it pisses me a little when some of them have free services like hulu and crunchyroll, but tell me they rather watch fansubs because they hate waiting through a 30-second ad. I myself buy anime monthly, and if there's a show I really want to watch that hasn't been licensed for streaming yet, I check it out via fansubs. I almost never by something before I watched it. I buy what I like. Most anime dvds/blu-rays, in comparison to other media entertainment sold in the US, is too pricey to buy based on "This looks good".

In responding to the original article: I wanted to say, I am not sure what does it mean by looking at pirates as "pets". Somehow I think the comparison is somewhat like comparing apples and oranges.

I'm not saying it's a good comparison, but I'm pretty sure the thinking goes that the paying customers are the ones who keep the goodies coming, much like the pet owner is the one who buys a big bag of pet food and plops it down in front of Fido because it makes them happy and when your pet's happy, you're happy.

In other words, "Whossa good boy? Fido sure loves watching Madoka Magika, yes he does!" *condescending headpat* as opposed to "Stop borrowing my DVD's without permission, you darned leach!" (Okay fine it's still a dumb comparison.)

Sorry, but does anyone at Gainax really have a right to talk about unauthorized copying after Daicon? Rolling Eyes

This isn't a very surprising view point from him considering Otaku no Video features a segment on an otaku character who does nothing but record stuff off TV onto VHS. Even though all of those segments are done to parody these people, they still call them fans despite their behavior.

Streaming is a great development - a functional alternative to downloading that get's timely releases, but I don't think it's developed enough yet:

I still encounter shows I like that don't have streams. Plus, I want anime streaming to eventually reach a format that I can easily watch on my TV. Funimation, ANN, and Crunchyroll need to have apps for the game consoles or smart TVs or whatever (or Apple needs to get the full app store on the Apple TV). Then there's movies. There are too many movie releases that you effectively can't rent anywhere, not even on-demand. I have had to download just to "rent" anime movies.

Lastly you've got Manga - a medium in which the bootleg distributors are light years ahead of the official industry. We need the manga equivalent of simulcasts with digital subscriptions, or just put everything on Kindle. Again, Shonen Jump Alpha is a nice start.

Also, Okada, don't be calling other people criminals while working for a company which engaged in tax evasion. Rolling Eyes

This is a horrible analogy. Yes, to a certain extent illegal dowloading/copying/distribution is a violation of a creator/licensor's rights, but I feel there is a big difference between an indirect violation, and one which is quite personal, painful and degrading.

Maybe the whole "You don't joke about rape" thing has yet to make its way through the collective conscious of Japan, but, I feel that this comparison is in poor taste.

Maybe a better analogy would be "Saying that you want to move out of your parents' home but yet spending all your money on crap you don't need because you have too much time on your hands due to unemployment" would be better, but somehow, I think that that might hit too close to home for certain fans.

Refreshing comment from Mr Okada. Nice to know he has a realistic attitude concerning illegal copying.

There are people in my anime club who download anime illegally and see no problem in doing it; now if they were dirt poor, or if the anime they were downloading wasn't available in America for a reasonable price then yeah I would pity them and such. But the thing is they aren't poor and the anime is available for $30 so they could pay to get it legally they just don't want to. So do I think I am a better fan then them? Yes, but I understand not everyone who illegally downloads anime is like that so I'm happy to have a few "pets." Wink

Maybe a law that said women can't vote, but this is a law that says you can't steal someone else's work/livelihood and then distribute it to thousands without getting permission. It's very much a right law.

Says you. But there's plenty of people arguing it's as unethical as, say, legalizing pollution in the name of the "common good"(yes, that's how it actually happened).

Which of course just further illustrates my point: if people can't even agree on what's right, how can we assume the law is?

What? The strange analogies that some people come up with lol. So should I assume you are one of my "pets," or are you just playing devils advocate?

Crunchyroll has:
Roku- set top box 70-100 dollars, you see shows on your tv.
Boxee box- same thing more expensive

Netflix on both above you will see anime from both funi and ann

wow, a refreshing view from someone legitimate in the anime industry. i'll never understand the anger certain anime fans have towards downloaders. i download and buy. my collection of purchased anime is quite huge actually. yet if i mention i downloaded redline, then it's an all out attack on me from certain people who somehow think they are better. waiting years for an official release makes you better? in the end, i buy it just the same as you except i got to enjoy it the day it came out online and I know beforehand i'm buying something that's good. seems to me i'm the smarter one. only in anime some people feel you have to pay for something you've never seen and have no idea you'll even like the least. how silly!
So you complain about people "who somehow think they are better", then turn around and act like you are better than other people. How quaint.
