Yeah, as people have said, this isn't really as shocking as it sounds. When you consider that anybody who lands even the most minor part in a single anime could be called a Seiyu.

From the article: "The remainder including actors, idols, and media talents who perform in other fields."

So, IOW, 10% full timers, 80% have other part time jobs and the other 10% are those people in other fields that get a job or two as a voice actor.

That cannot be right...the cross-over rate is much higher.

Maybe this is a helpful read.

So who is this blogger you're quoting as authority?
I know what things are like here in sunny SoCal & the various articles I've seen over the yrs with various actors/musicians/etc having to work day jobs. It really depends on what one considers a decent living wage, doesn't it? Some people can survive on less than others. Family, alimony, etc add into the picture. If you're paying $500 a month or more child support, it's just that much more one needs to make a living wage. Willing to live on a cheap diet, or want more expensive cuisine? Cheap liquor or champagne? It all defines livability.
I have a pretty large collection of anime & I notice the names change season to season. The VA's remaining from the 90's are considered vets by now while this decade has seen new VA's pop up. One name might be all over one year, but 5 yrs later the hot new VA is often someone else. Some of them have been coasting along for some time before they get the lead roles while others appear from nowhere, land a popular role & they become the hot new name. One would assume the lead role pays more than a supporting role so 5 or 6 lead roles vs 5 or 6 roles that appear in less than half the episodes would probably make a diff (I have wondered if they get paid by the word. If so Seki was in trouble in Gungrave)
It also probably depends on where one lives. Tokyo's expensive they say so how long of a commute is one willing to make? I always thought the people who bought homes in Riverside & drove for 2 hrs every day to work insane, but they don't see it that way. Do these guys stay near the work or commute?

There's also each person's personal comfort zone. When you're working 2 jobs, when are you secure in your position in the 2nd job to quit one of them? How many carry that day job as a security blanket in case the acting dries up?

The percentage of actors in the U.S. making a living at it is probably similar

When I was in college, at least once a year the Theater Department chair would give his students a reality check by posting a news article from Actor's Equity (the union for professional stage actors) about wages. Each year, the article would point out that, for nearly 95% of the membership, their yearly wages from stage acting would place them below the poverty line for the year.

Granted, this refers to stage actors, not specifically voice actors, and not every professional actor is Equity, but since Equity does have contract and dues (percentage of wages) information at hand, it can be considered an accurate portrayal of the incomes of their members.

Greg Ayres, in his fansub panels and interviews, has said similar things, that very few are full time, and nobody's getting rich at it.

Yeah, he's always been adamant that those involved have to love what they do because it doesn't pay. Also, I know that at my university the description for the performing arts and theater arts majors flat out suggest getting a second major outside of the arts because odds are they won't be financially well off.
