Except FUNI outsourced their retail side to TRSI in 2007, so it would take a much smaller sales staff (arguably none at all depending on how heavily aspected toward distribution or promotion) than even that. |

| Another possible scenario here is that Funimation restructured to make their process more streamlined, as they said, and this ended up in two positions becoming unneeded/redundant, and has nothing to do with their financial situation. Or as well, they could have laid off the two (or more?) people in order to secure themselves for a longer run until some of their new properties and partnerships can start bringing in revenue, even though they aren't in trouble at the moment.
I wish good luck to those who are now looking for jobs in this horrid economy, and good luck to Funi in your continued business ventures. |

| It's entirely possible that Funimation is proactively attempting to stave off major financial problems later. An ounce of prevention and all that. With unemployment in America at a 26-year high and no sector immune to the deepening recession, it only stands to reason that they join many other companies in this country in looking for ways to trim the fat.
If they act like other healthy companies, the layoffs will delay or eliminate future programs and projects rather than affect current and reliable revenue streams. The last paragraph in their press release indicates that is exactly what they are doing. On the plus side, entertainment companies are historically relatively recession-proof. As the economy gets worse, people increasingly look for ways to escape reality, at least for a little while. See, for example, Hollywood during the Great Depression. |

| Wouldn't have expected to see that happening but with things going on these days it makes sense. I guess everyday has to take a hard hit somewhere. Too many licenses. | ||||

| It wasn't 2 people.
Over 20 people lost their job at Funimation this week. |

| Sigh. Always bad news...I just hope this doesn't have an effect on any future dubbing. I hate buying series with nothing but subs that any dedicated fan could have slapped together at home with a fancy label. Don't quit dubbing, Funi! Even the niche titles! | ||||

| should be interesting to see the prospectus this year...
Having some stock in the parent company provides some interesting insight to some of the challenges Funimation faces, but also the success which they've had. |

It is difficult to describe how badly Anime sales nationwide have deteriorated over just the last 3 months - along with just about everything else. Everyone (and I mean everyone) is making rapid 'adjustments', you just aren't hearing about it. Funi is making the necessary cuts just like everyone else, that's all this is, and this does not indicate that they are having any financial problems, they are just having accomodate decreased demand and revenue. Physical media, digital media, advertising - everything is down. Everyone will get a better picture of this when Navarre releases it's 4th quarter numbers a few weeks from now. Trust me, if this was 'the end of the world as we know it' (and it isn't) Funi would be the very last R1 company to go down. Right now everyone is just doing what they have to do to make it through this downturn. If Sherry (former Funi Employee) is trolling through this thread - We Really Miss You and wish you best of luck! It's really going to be dull without you. Bob (aka Robert) The Anime Corner Store |

| Keep in mind that "Layoff" is the usually the term for "the temporary suspension of employment of an employee or (more commonly) a group of employees for business reasons". Let's, for all these companies' ex-employees' sake, hope that it means that and not the recent usage of it which is the "the permanent elimination of positions as a cost-cutting measure (or for other reasons)". (source: Wikipedia)
I can understand now why TokyoPop didn't hire me as a junior editor last July, and I'm grateful they didn't. I'd hate to be out of work . . . but out of work in L.A. (where everything seems to cost a ton!). Ugh. I shudder to think of what type of situation I'd be in; I can only sympathize and pray for those who are now in that situation. |

| People are always getting laid off, it's just what happens. It just seems more apparent with the icky economy these days. | ||||

True, we see this kind of thing happen all the time. Even with other major anime companies. Everyone must relise that the economy is terrible right now, and also funimation was not have nearly as many people layd off as other companies. |

Gen himself has stated the Funimation Channel has been a money loosing venture for some time. It's more one of the those long term investment ideas. They loose money on it now, hoping they will make it up down the line. Most cable channels loose a lot of money the first several years they are in operation. Nickelodeon and MTV lost money for nearly a decade before becoming profitable for the first time. Considering the problems Funi has had with getting their channel on carriers, I expect it will be sometime before it even breaks even. And with all the problems in the retail sector, cutbacks at Best Buy, the financial problems at FYE, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them throw in the towel on the Funi Channel while the economy sucks. Or at least scale it back some. On the bright side, they do have some Funi Channel programming airing on Anime Selects on Comcast. |
