Considering the struggle I had to go through to get my ADV copy, I hope this bodes well for those who were a little too late to order it when it was in print.
(Rightstuf seems to still have copies, but I don't know if they'll have enough left to supply demand.)

why are they redubbing it? I didn't think the ADV Dub was bad. I have always felt that ADV has taken good care of their Makoto Shinkai properties!

Why the hell would anyone bother redubbing it in the first place? It's much cheaper to just use the original English audio track instead, since the film's already been dubbed! Just look at FUNi's release of Slayers--they didn't bother replacing the old English dub! So why would anyone do this with 5 Centimeters Per Second anyway? If it ain't broke, DON'T [expletive] FIX IT!
Which is why I too await Bang Zoom's response. as to whether it is actually redubbing it. That report was from a fan based source which makes it a bit less reliable than it coming from the horses mouth, so to speak. It will be a bit bizarre if true though, still more money in the pockets of VA's and for them that's not a bad thing in these economic shadowed times.

I have been fine with all ADV dubs but there was this one scene in 5cm that I think they crucially messed up on. Before the licensed, I was astonished by the film and have seen over Byousoku subbed by over 4 different groups and thought the Japanese dub was well done as well. The cast members were fine in the English dub but I still can't shake how they handled the the spoiler[Kiss scene.] Every time I've seen it in the past, it gave me a moving and bone chilling reaction but it just didn't have the same feeling. Although I'm sure this is being too critical/in-depth and I doubt many others could agree but it would have created a much more emotional scene if they added a simple spoiler["Don't" in that particular scene where Takaki says, "They look like snowflakes."]

I was the detective who found out that a certain actor had it listed on his resume. Bandai has it and they are just denying it because people found out. They may not announce it yet but they have it.

lucky you, I paid twice that amount for the title on ebay (yes, I'm stupid, I know Rolling Eyes ). I still haven't finished watching either, only watched the first part, have yet to watch the last 2.

We never even had a chance to buy it here (other than importing) before ADV US pulled it as ADV UK never released it, despite doing some theatrical showings.

I thought this movie's dub was pretty well done (based off a review I read here several months ago), why is there a re-dub? More to the point, why is this such a big deal for Bandai? I get that the company is trying to inform that they do not hold the license, but why make a big deal about it?

This is quite preplexing, since this movie was actually well done.

They'll be doing a redub for the same reason they did a redub of Gurren Lagann: They don't want to give any money at all to one of their major competitors.

If Funimation had it, they would've licensed ADV's dub for it, much as they did for the other ADV titles they licensed on the rebound.

This is one of my favorite titles. It will haunt you. I bought it when it came out. Didn't listen to the dub. Never do. Especially when ADV is involved. If you haven't seen it, definitely check out the re-release, if it happens.

I thought that most of the time when licenses expire or become lost, the English dub and subtitles revert back to the original producers. So theoretically Bandai wouldn't have had to give ADV anything. And even if they did, I can't imagine it would've been less cost-effective than commissioning an all-new dub. That's if they have it, which is a conclusion we're still jumping to at this point. I'd rather wait for some official info, no offense to Jack Cox.

I'm pretty certain (although not 100%) that the rights for the actual recorded audio of the dub stay with whoever recorded them, as kind of a sub-license. If you look in the credits of any English adaption, you'll see something along the lines of "English version provided by" and then the dub studio, Since ADV's dubs are done in house, this would probably just be a case of Bandai not wanting to have to sub-license a dub from a major competitor.

Licensing problems for a title just released ten months ago? Truly something new to me; I've never witnessed the same thing at this side of the Pacific.

Something is up. Bandai usually doesn't pull this sort of stuff.
