I was a huge fan of the anime and was wondering how I can read Kanzaka-san's books that triggered the anime (legally of course). Also, if anyone DOES have them, any notable differences?

The Lost Universe novels seem to be out-of-print in Japan now. (Amazon Japan has recently started to sell the Kindle version of them, though.)
Probably the legal way for a native user of English to read the Lost Universe novels would be to buy the Japanese edition and become fluent in Japanese to the level where you can read light novels in the original.

I hate to revive my own thread, but without leaking out the text with what little I can translate right now, I can say this much about the novels. The sequence of events is not the same as the anime and Canal looks very different.
