I'm a regular reader too ~ #? accounted for! (It's got to be past 8 by now. Wink ) I don't even have an interest in figures, but Rob's commentary/writing is superb! I love the sense of humor, so I keep coming back for more. Smile Glad to hear I'll get a weekly dose.

I really liked this article, especially the writing and the humour. And the toys do look rather cheap; I certainly wouldn't buy them, or even accept them as presents.

But I do disagree with the article's underlying message, which is that if you wanted porn you should go out and buy it instead of these. Placed between the desire for cute things, and the desire for sexual things, is the large but indeterminate area of Ecchi. Plenty of people view it, even more like it, and it caters towards the crowd that wants titillation rather than outright "sexual gratification".

These tasteless figurines may not be pornography, but that doesn't mean there isn't a huge market for items like them that are, cute, sexy, and pandering to the various fetishes. Just because you (and I) found them neither sexy nor cute doesn't mean that everyone feels the same way. I mean, they don't make them because they feel like it; someone has to be buying this stuff.

On another note, good on you Rob for getting your column featured weekly. I may not collect Anime or Manga related figurines, models and toys, but you do have a great style, and I do make a point to read every Astro Toy article. Keep up the good work.

Well there are a few model kits of Asuka like this one.

The face sculpt isnt perfect but its pretty good if you have the patience to build and paint it. Wink

Now what would really be cool is some EVA themed Busou Shinki's.

Don't be so sure of that!

Actually, it's not Rei. It's just Unit 00 as a chibi female character. I got it the other day. I was trying for Gendo.

I was most weirded out when I saw a figure of Asuka in a wedding dress. For whatever reason, that one bothered me far more than anything else I'd seen. Also, it's a little annoying that there are so many Rei and Asuka variants, but not as many for Misato.

I was wired out in a store in Japan when I saw an entire column of shelves with those wedding dress figures.

Not sure if anybody else has confirmed this yet, because I'm too lazy to read the four pages of posts so far, but yes, these figures indeed do come from UFO Catcher machines. They're produced for Sega specifically for the machines. I have these figures as well (I got them out of one of those said UFO Catcher machines), and while the cameltoe is a bit disturbing, it isn't visible on either character if the characters are sitting face-forward. Also, the liquid in the dish (mine, at least) is distinctly blue, not white -- it doesn't really look "milky" at all.

Yeah, I'll admit they're not the best Eva figures ever, but I don't really like Eva anyway, so it doesn't make a big difference to me. They're cute when placed face-forward on a shelf -- exactly how and where they sit in my room.

I don't see what's so bad about them...They're catgirls. That's good enough for me. Rob, If they're REALLY that awful, you should find them a new home. Hook a brother up, give em' to me. They'd look great in my collection.

Rei's cat dish would be much nicer if it came empty, so you could fill it up yourself.

Also, if it came with a micro box of cat food too put in said bowl.

Said it better than I could've. The separation of cute and sexy is the reason things like lipstick and high heels exist.

You guys are pretty bad at this, but don't get me wrong. These, like most Eva figures, are really dumb.

For everyone who asks "Why'd you buy it if you weren't going to like it?"

Astro Toy's purpose is to review toys/figures/statues. The purpose of the column isn't to focus exclusively on "good" models, but rather to look at all varieties of product. Rob's review of these figures shows people things about them that they didn't know, possibly resulting in an "I was going to buy these, but now I'm not going to." That's something I appreciate in a review.

It also manages to display the product in such a way that someone who wants it will realize they want it despite the fact that Rob ragged on it. As I've said many, many times before, a well written review should provide the reader with the information they need to come to their own conclusion, even if that conclusion is, "The reviewer didn't like the product, but based on what he said, I think I would like it," or vice-versa. At least two people have responded in this thread with replies along those lines.

Dont forget me! I too, am a regular.

I agree, these figures look like crap. I saw some nurse ones in those UFO catchers and they were better than those.

I have an Asuka UFO sega one with her in a police uniform and it looks great! (if only they left her hair auburn/red instead of blonde)

Maybe sega is turning over to cheap labor/sculptors for UFO figures?

Sega's stopped making games that are fun to play or anything like that, so they have to resort to sluttifying the Eva girls.

That's my guess, anyway. Anime smile + sweatdrop

I have no desire to buy any sort of anime figures, creepy catgirls or not, but Rob's sarcastic brilliance makes this one of my favorite columns on the site. Keep the kitty fodder coming! Smile

I'm glad your column is going weekly! Very Happy

I was pretty saddened by these figures...as a girl who collects a TON of figures and even has a couple of mildly questionable Haruhi statues, I can honestly say even I was upset by them. They were poorly sculpted, and the built-in cameltoe was disturbing. *shudder*
