I will deffinately be looking for those at my next con. I think they are super cute, but then again I can't remember the last time a studied the detail of my toy's panties. Just a thing Asuka's ass will be facing the back of the shelf, and Rei's the bottom. I guess that's a no brainer huh? I suppose I could turn her upside down to offend people. Anyway I think they are rockin'!

I actually have a Neko Rei. It's very cute. Not at all like these figures. And it is also a licensed product. And made by Sega no less! Odd.

Actually, it's not Rei. It's just Unit 00 as a chibi female character. I got it the other day. I was trying for Gendo.

Ha! You don't have to try very hard. Out of three of those figures I've bought, two have been Gendo. In fact, the first one I bought, I was about to open it, hoping with all my might for an Asuka, when I said to my friend "Watch, I'll probably get the worst figure...Ritsuko...oh wait, no...GENDO" I open the box, pull it out, and sure enough, it's Gendo.
And today I bought two more only to get more Gendo. Luckily, the guy at the store let me trade for an already opened Asuka.

Anyway, I thought these figures were cute, but I also liked the Mikuru figure that had squeezable boobs.

Just wanted to say that while I don't read your column religiously its always entertaining, and this one made me laugh a few times. Great bit of writing with some amusing references, although you left out the r in tawdry.

I'll be tuning in next week, keep it up!

Because of my obsession with catgirls, I'd really like to add these to my collection. I looked around online for them with little luck. The one place I found them, they were sold out. Does anyone happen to know where I might find them??? Not exactly on-topic, but I gotta ask.

I find this article quite hilarious. Why'd you waste money on such a 'bad' purchase? It's obvious this is aimed at certain parts of the population. Also, modifications/showing skin is quite common among moe hobbies, especially figures. Lastly, there's an obvious difference between figures and action figures. Still figures are meant for display, not to play with. If action figures are your thing, then buy Figmas or Revoltechs.
That last picture is also really childish, showing no respect towards all those who was involved with the end product. Really disappointing to see an article like this from such a wide-reaching anime site like this.

Maybe he bought them specifically for the purpose of razzing on them mercilessly, such as when people intentionally seek out a "bad" movie with the intent of mockery. I seriously doubt the reviewer had any perverse sexual desires he wanted satisfied by staring at two Eva girls dressed in embarrassing cat-like get-ups.
Well, if that's true, then he could have just used a picture. I know if I wanted to mock something I wouldn't waste my hard earned money nor time for it. He took time to point out that "GASP!" the anime industry contains things that doesn't make sense and can be somewhat sexual. He must be either REALLY rich or have too much time on his hands.

He writes reviews for toys. It's a work related purchase since this is his job. Did you know movie critics have to pay for tickets at theaters to crappy movies to review those too? Do you write letters to Ebert and Entertainment Weekly to tell them that if they didn't like the movie they shouldn't have bought a ticket? Sometimes it seems like people forget these are columns and not the same as personal blog posts, and the people writing them are professionals.

Ahhh why on earth would a figure have/or need a camel toe? Ew ew ew. I hate cameltoes >__<

The most ridiculous camel toe I've seen on an anime figure is on the Max Factory trading figure of HIGURASHI's Satoko--she's got camel toe on her tights, so if you paint her tights flesh-colored she looks like she's wearing nothing under her dress...ummm...I didn't actually do that though. I love the litter box photo--it reminded me of the Nokomiya Nono figure I got that came with one of those swan-shaped training toilets--I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt and assuming she has a little brother or sister. I thought the EVA catgirl figures were cute, but I always like catgirls anyways. I'm looking forward to seeing this column weekly.

Now, Gendo Ikari dressed up in a skimpy catgirl costume and doing the same pose/expression as that Rei, THAT is something I'd pay to have sitting on my desk.

Thanks for the great column. I look forward to reading more.

Plenty of online stores and blogs will show you pictures of a figure from every angle, but it's not always easy to tell what is actually what with these figures. Is every online photo an extreme close up that makes the figure huge, when it's actually three inches long? Nobody covers that. Is the thing falling apart out of the box? Is it painted well?

Reviews like this are of immense value. Go buy more stuff to review! Smile

I spend way too much money on figures these days (yes I have PVC disease) and been burned more than once by a figure that looked awesome online and turned out to be far less awesome upon delivery.

No I am not giving any away.

I have a different Sega Asuka in bunny girl format. It's the only Asuka or Eva thing I own, and also my only UFO Catcher. It's not very well made. It doesn't even look much like Asuka. But it had bunny ears and it was cheap. I think that's one of the main appeal points on the UFO Catcher toys like this: cheap.

If people expect $130 1/4 scale PVC or $200 coldcast quality out of a sub $20 toy (note: toy), then there is almost certainly going to be disappointment. Worse if people get tricked into PAYING that much for something like this.

These two Eva figures definitely look like they're perfect for somebody with a couple extra bucks in their pocket and perhaps a beer or two in their stomach. Think of them as peanuts for your beer rather than collectibles for a display case.

I was inspired to do an Eva figurine search from this review, so you're lucky. Wink

Overall, the problem is this—the figures are too cute to be sexy, and too sexy to be cute, so they just end up really disturbing. If the figures had been made with more realistic faces and the appropriate number of digits on each hand, they probably would have been all right. Or if they had not dressed like psychopathic sluts from a college production of Logan's Run, they probably would have been adorable. As is, the cute/sexy combo is just disturbing, which is one of the (many, many ) reasons lolita-stuff is so horrible and awful.

It's made worse by the fact that this is totally on purpose. Obviously, the cameltoes were put there by some sculptor intentionally, loathsome at it might be. And it took me until I opened the figures’ packages and saw them from all angles, but I'm 100% convinced Rei and Asuka have been sculpted in two of the three basic sexual positions.

Rob, you are just a complete and total idiot.

Everyone knows there are SIX basic penile-vaginal sexual positions. ~_^

True, but the main part of the article criticizes something everyone can see on photos: the look. Little is said about the sheer quality of the product, the material, the working, the value. In your comparison, it's like complaining about the ethic lows of a movie poster or a trailer in a movie review. It is more a "lesson" in morality than anything else. But does that make a good review? "Buy tasteful figures or porn, but not something mildly titillating, or else!" I'm doubtful.

If someone dropped a turd, and drew a cute lil Rei smiley on that deuce, would you display it proudly?
