About the Pizza Hut advertising: There are a lot of cases where companies keep their advertising compartmentalized. It could be that Pizza Hut Japan were the ones that paid for it, and the US branch didn't want it. I mean, especially in S1, you have some very graphic stuff happening -- stuff that a lot of Americans wouldn't find very appealing.

So while that may fly in Japan and be fine, it would give a negative image to them in the US, so they didn't want it.

To be honest I think this could be what's holding up Tiger & Bunny but the apparently it's not unusual for feet dragging from Viz to a certain degree so I am not 100% sure.

The issue comes from the fact that loads of the advertising in that show is very obviously Japan centric. Japanese news sites, Japanese Banks, and so on. Even the companies that have big arms in several different countries are using the show to advertise Japan specific stuff - e.g. Blue Rose and PepsiNex which doesn't exist in the US or over here in the UK I do believe - I think it's the equivalent to Pespi Max... (i.e. it's a different a low calorie Pepsi - that's not Diet Pepsi) but not exactly.

So maybe Viz having to go through the series frame by frame to digitally paint out the logos and and either replace them with analogues that are fake companies that sound alike or with different but still real adverts... or with nothing. Hopefully not the latter, I'd prefer no tampering at all but if it has to be done removing any advertising would miss the point of the show's setting and a lot of it's commentary on commercialism.

But looking at it from the point of the advertisers - I could understand (even if as a fan who prefers little to no editing on her favorite shows - within reason - I disagree with it) that they'd see it as what would be the point of advertising a product that doesn't exist in the US? Going back to the PepsiNex example I believe there is a product that's been relaunched that's basically the same thing in the US called PepsiNext which could be used instead - also would hit home even more with the whole "this series take on the meta-human concept are called NEXT" so... heck maybe they are having to go through the show to digitally paint a "t" on every frame that logo was in?

Also I apologise if I am just summarizing a point that's already been made withing this thread but I've missed. I can be bad at spotting things some times Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

Night Raid was supposed to be a HUGE hit and it flopped big time. that is why sentai got the licenses for so little and ended up getting the bluray rights (and making a dub since it was a bluray release). the show is actually very good and was fun to work on at times. but the info dumps that had to be done due to it's time period really made people think it was boring.

You have me intrigued - it that anecdotal or first hand?

I don't know for sure, but I think they are referring to their efforts on fansubbing it rather than actually working at Sentai.

I see what you mean, but among the people who would be watching it, it must be appealing, or at least not offensive, or they wouldn't be watching it. Seems like it would be good advertising to a demographic they'd want to reach.

I guess I don't remember anything that offensive in CG, but that's normal for me. Did they use the pizza a la American Pie or something? oO

@GracieLizzy I'd think the only thing that advertisers would want changed in the visuals would be, as you said, adding a 't' to Pepsi Nex, and changing co.jp to com for Amazon. Maybe UStream.tv, if they objected. The rest I think are either businesses in Japan or anime-related companies, like Bandai and FigureArts. Btw, you might have been talking about a background image, but if you meant SoftBank, that's a telecom company. :)

Advertising for companies that don't operate here seems like the same result as creating phony brands. But I'm thinking if no one made them change anything for the streams, what's the point of demanding that for the dvds? Of course my thinking on this topic clearly runs counter to the people in charge of the brands. :D

Oops, yeah I made a mistake their and assume they were a bank. Having just seen a bunch of people dressed entirely lime green on top of a green and white party bus (playing "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen) advertising Lloyds TSB just before the Olympic Torch Relay recently probably had an effect on me. Yeah I do not understand the whims of advertisers/brand owners at all.

I thought it was a bank too - actually, I thought it was a fictional bank, until I noticed the logo while visiting excite.jp. Very Happy So I clicked the link and was surprised to find them selling phones and other electronics.

They probably don't care about streams, whereas a disc release is something that's going to be watched again and again; there's also the fact that the master that Viz is working on would be the one that's used for any broadcast, so there's much more reason to care.

Well this is just me musing, I haven't heard anything about any advertisers actually having any demands but as you said it wouldn't surprise me. Especially if there are hopes for it to end up on the revived Toonami.

Tell me about it. I can't understand how even half of the original poorly drawn crap on AS gets green-lit. -_-

Totally man. You answered a lot of questions that I had about this harrowing process. I had theorized some of it (and was somewhat right about a few things), but it's nice to get the nitty on why licensing can be such a pain.

there was one episode that took three months to translate because we constantly had to consult japanese history text books, you can probably guess which one that was. that was exasperating, however the soundtrack and the action scenes settled around an actual argument where well done and working out what words/ phrases would need a translation with everyone was nice. we initially tried to translate the various languages rather then the subtitles... boy was that a mistake. we ended up taking the German in the (I think) 4th or 5th episode to the head professor at a local college and the Asian accent was so thick they could not understand any of it. night raid was a unique show that normally does not get made in the anime industry.

It could either be from the Sunrise-side of things in that Pizza Hut only paid for advertising for the Japanese market. Or it could be that the US-side didn't want it, or honestly, probably didn't even know it existed.

The markets for Pizza Hut in Japan and the US are vastly different. PH in Japan goes for a very high-end specialty market. They have a lot of crazy very-time-intensive pizzas with expensive toppings. And a lot of their advertising is directly marketed towards kids. They have Pizza Hut-branded anime merchandise and pizza boxes at the stores, etc.

Whereas in the US, Pizza Hut is more a mid-grade seller. Their pizzas don't require a ton of prep time, and the pricepoint isn't outrageously expensive. Their commercials also go for adult and/or family appeal, not appeal to children. There is no kids-branded marketing on boxes or merch, etc.

So having Pizza Hut suddenly in some anime unrelated to the broader US marketing campaign just wouldn't fit. Especially if you could have some "Think of the children" or Bible-thumper group hear about Pizza Hut being marketed in the show -- next to images like the one where the one character was shooting all those people at the stadium, blood everywhere, little kid crying with dead people all around him, etc.

...that would not go over well for them...
