You guys are forgetting another possibility, maybe Ghibli is trying to put out their own products and by pass Disney. Some anime companies are starting to add English subtitles to their series, and with Japan now being in region 1 like the US with blu ray they can bypass US companies.

Ghibli DVD's in Japan, and actually pretty much worldwide(IE Taiwan, Hong Kong,USA) have always either included the English dub, or the Subtitles.

Isn't Ghibli's position on the matter that fans should watch their movies in their own language? At any rate, at most Ghibli would start commissioning dubs itself - it's not going to stop them anytime soon.

AFAIK, Buena Vista Japan (Disney) still distributes Ghibli DVDs and Blurays in Japan, so Disney can still somehow have a hand in the R1 production.

enurtsol: Yeah, but if they're willing to drop Princess Mononoke, then they might consider doing the same for future titles.

Princess Mononoke was distributed by Miramax, who was owned by Disney at the time. However, ALL of Miramax's film library was sold to FilmYard Holdings (not just Mononoke), who then divided their catalog on home video between Lionsgate and Echo Bridge. I believe Lionsgate has Mononoke now, but I'm not totally sure. However, Disney didn't "drop" Princess Mononoke. It just got sold with the rest of Miramax's former film library.

Purple: Yeah, but it was Disney which sold off Miramax's library. So they could've kept Princess Mononoke, if they thought it was worth the trouble, and they didn't, even though it did make money. Their stigma about any animated production that's not "family-friendly" is gonna cost 'em eventually.

They didn't keep a single Miramax title (including kids' movies that were very family friendly, or even any of the Oscar winners), so I doubt their reasoning for not keeping Mononoke was any different from the other 400+ Miramax films they sold off (which was literally all of them).

Disney already stated that they no longer have Monoke. It's just a question of if someone does have it in North America, or if the rights have now lapsed.

The home video rights were either given to Lionsgate or Echo Bridge like other Miramax films... the former is most likely the case, since Lionsgate has yet to re-release all their Miramax stuff, but Echo Bridge has released everything given to them from Miramax (including Pokemon movies 4-7).

That's assuming that Miramax even still had the rights when they were sold. That's not a given.

True, but when ANN contacted Buena Vista/Disney about the title last year, they were directed to Lionsgate, who merely said that there was "no current information on the release of this title". I'm not saying it's positive, but it's very likely Lionsgate has the title right now, and may be caught in some legal mumbo jumbo with it at the moment. Not all titles from Miramax have been re-released by either Lionsgate or Echo Bridge. I don't think they would be in a hurry to release it since the original DVD is still readily available for purchasing at a decent price, and continues to be a decent seller.

For the record, Pokemon 4Ever, Pokemon Heroes, Pokemon: Jirachi Wish Maker, and Pokemon: Destiny Deoxys were also a part of the deal, and Echo Bridge HAS re-released those to DVD and Blu-Ray with no problem.

Well, yeah, it was basically a fire sale. But it's pretty obvious it was a short-sighted attempt to bolster their in-house division, and will thus devalue the company in the end. Avengers did great for them, but what else do they got to talk about this year?
