Yeah, all the slight problems with players or converters or this jazz or that jazz, I've just always been lucky enough to plug my laptop right into TV's, thus bypassing everything that could be construed as a problem. Projectors are my favorite displays though, because I love gigantic size. How do those media converters plug into your TV, component or HDMI?

The reason that fansubs have the subs so close to the bottom of the screen is that they assume most people are watching it on a PC monitor, which does not crop the edges of the picture like a TV does.
This also explains the fancy font issue, fonts that are legible on a monitor often look blurry on a TV.

| Well... I think the ones our News Elf is seeing are a bit over the top, but I wouldn't mind all that much if official subs used a better font. Right now, a lot of subtitles even on nice sets just don't look very good. They're choppy and unnatural-looking. Would it really be so hard to insert a font that doesn't look pixelated? |

And that's just what the majority of the fansub groups had boiled down to, attention seeking. Otherwise, why would they put up subtitles that are just down right distracting, if not annoying? We're supposed to be watching anime, not some comic books with words leaping out of the pages. And don't tell me they're supposed to look like that for fansubs anime, because I know for a fact that the original TV broadcasts is anything but the illegally altered textile bonanza that's today's fansubs.
To top it off, this attention-grabbing displays of subtitles are creating a new breed of anime watchers, that are watching the subtitles instead of the actual anime. And we got the majority of the posts on this thread to prove it. |

And Skuld from Ah! My Goddess, for her specialty is blanketing everything in her line of fire with big bold texts, can't forget that.
(The upgraded version allows her to blast things in Japanese kanji instead of the plain old katakana, an improvement!) |

Thing about fansubs:
many groups suck yes, but there are a handful that are actually good, better than companies at times like Eclipse, SS, DB, LE, gg (not when they started), m.3.3.w, Ureshii/Froth-Bite/Frostii, Ani-Kraze, etc... there are a few others. However, I don't like how many people harshly criticize translation when a majority don't even know Japanese OR even try to fansub.
Fansubbers are also better with typesetting and styling, plus they add Karaoke from time to time. You can't really compare video quality since one is straight from the box while the other are rips. In other words, if companies put a little more thought into how they format their subs to make it less painful on the eyes, especially for those of us who are disgusted by dubs most of the times, as well as add an on/off option for karaoke, as well as sold it a bit less, I think they could gain a far larger profit.
Here's the thing, it doesn't take THAT much more effort/work to actually style the subs and make it at least presentable, especially if fansubbers could do it so easily. This is why I rarely by US dvds and rather import the R2, mod it, slap subs on it, and watch it on my own. |

I suppose that depends on what kind of converter you buy. There are all kinds. I've still got a CRT TV so I bought a VGA to component/S-video converter. It also does VGA to VGA for some reason.  |

Nina's reaction to that shitty fansub mirrors my own to the letter.
"Itadakimasu"? Why can't they just write "Time to eat" or "Thanks for the food"? Furthermore, that note takes up half the screen--how can anyone possibly watch the show like that? 
One of my main problems with the in situ translation notes is that they go so far as to explain things that the Japanese audience DIDN'T see. I don't give two shits if it says where President Obama gets his business suits; get it off the damn screen! These things WEREN'T there on Japanese TV! If the elevens weren't told what it meant, then the director didn't intend for them to be, and we shouldn't be told, either! Sweet evil Jesus! No sane person could possibly focus on the anime when the TV screen is cluttered with an entire Wikipedia article!
Don't get me started on the honorifics, either. **groan** |

You're right. It's a lame excuse. It's old. It's even annoying.
But here's the thing: your own constant obsession with this topic, flaunted repeatedly in pretty much any thread you can find ("Ah, a thread about cute kittens and custard pie in anime! Perfect for a rant on the evils of fansub-watching!") is twice as annoying.
Tone it down, you're making a pest of yourself.

Sorry mods, I had to let it all out on this one.
Now see here, Kit-Tsukasa, there are things that I don't get about people like you. First, why would you went through the trouble of subtitling something for just yourself to watch, when you could do without the localization in the first place?
Second, as an amateur hobbyist, who only know the technical aspects of only one form of localization process, what sort of accountability do you have for even criticizing the professional voice dubbing post production, when you don't even know about the industrial, legal, and the economical aspects of copyrights, licensing, and localizing? Or the whole R1 anime media industry for that matter?
Finally, just because fansubbers happened to know the Japanese language, that doesn't make them any different than amateur hobbyists. And these are my opinions based on what I know that's true, for I was an ex-VHS fansubber, with enough honor and respect towards the anime industry to quit 14 years ago, to settle down and watch the industry to flourish and grow from the sideline. Until the internet fansub groups went out of control due to greed. |
