I would like to see Masakazu Katsura draw a Batman one-shot or a serialized manga series. Since he's a a big Batman fan and Zetman is just [expletive] awesome! That's all I am gonna say lol

As much as I love Conan, I can understand why FUNI didn't pick up any more of the dub. It's such a long show and the writing/casting probably took up a lot of time.

I'm grateful they got far enough with the movies for us to see Haibara/Sherry. Hopefully they'll pick up a few more (at least #10)

I'd really like to support Media Blasters, but they just haven't been releasing much of anything I'm interested in. Pretty much the only thing I want from them right now is Doujin Work.

Regarding comics vs manga, I hope the creators never learn from each other. That way there will continue to be differences in the products, which means more variety.

I personally plan to own as much of the localized Conan material as I can. I'm an active reader of the manga (current English issue completely read) and I've been purchasing the movies. I think the problem with the show was indeed its mixed content genre. Kids solving "violent" murder cases that the police need to figure out themselves is kind of a strange combination, and you've got the whole overarching plot with the Syndicate hovering somewhere amidst a few of the cases.

I'm more impressed with how Aoyama comes up with these individual cases; so many of the murder mechanics are pretty complicated.

Never understood this logic. Funi always puts both the dub and sub versions on their releases. If you don't like one, just switch to the other. And Case Closed/Detective Conan wasn't severely edited like those 4Kids dubs. Just a few name changes, from what I recall.

Would you still invite a man to dinner if he took a dump on the roof of your car but then bought you a new one to replace it?

All supporting the release does is encourage them to do more bad/joke dubs. There's better ways to support the creator than R1 releases anyway.

Honestly, I'm perfectly content with the 130 episodes and 6 movies we got from Case Closed. It's one of my all-time favorite anime series, but 130 episodes is still a LOT to watch, and it's enough to keep you entertained for a LONG time. However, I would be disappointed if we only got a couple dozen episodes of Case Closed. I can understand why the show would be more difficult to market, but at least it was handled as best as possible, and the show was still a modest success. I honestly can't see the show being any more successful. Maybe once the show ends in Japan, FUNimation could give it another try, but I can't see them ever licensing the whole series, and even if they don't give it another shot, I'll still be happy with what we've got.

At least we're still getting the manga! Very Happy

BTW, the infamous pop-tart campaign did NOT work for Sailor Moon. The only reasons DiC finished the second season is because of the show's ratings and merchandise success in Canada, and Irwin Toys sponsored DiC to release more episodes coincidentally around the same time SOS initiated their pop-tart campaign. Cloverway (AKA Toei USA) had Seasons 3-4 dubbed because of the show's success on Toonami (Sailor Moon was initially a ratings failure when it was only in syndication).

Such a campaign would NOT work for Case Closed, and I don't think I need to explain why. Buying the DVDs would by far be your best bet.

You mean you're content, I presume? Contempt (loathing) is almost the opposite of content (happy).

I asked the Funimation reps about the status of Conan after their Otakon panel today. Their response was something along the lines of "stay tuned for an upcoming announcement". (I don't remember their exact phrasing, so don't quote me.) Now I don't know enough legalese to know how much hope to put into that response, but there was no hint of "we're completely finished with this show" in their response, so take that as you will.

They also told me to tell my friends to let them know we want more Conan, so let's let them know we want more Conan!

Sorry about that; I thought hentai was anime that has a lot of sex in it.

...wait what? (o_O)

Not all sex is porn. Though some things really straddle the line.

I don't know if you were making a kinky pun, but I laughed!

Yes, hentai is basically anima/manga porn. Shows that have sexual/suggestive content would be ecchi. Hentai is a step beyond that to having actual visual representation of the act itself, though with the nasty bits masked because of Japanese laws.

OTOH, do Conan fans even try to build more buzz and sales for their series? Brian is certainly right on that one. If you do not pay up, then they got no incentive to pursue more of what you like.

Conan fans don't want more Conan if Funi's treatment is what we get. That's the thing. It's like blaming people why people didn't support 4Kids One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew or Ojamajo Doremi. No one wants to support that version.

In Funimation's defense, I believe that a lot of the changes made to the script and character names were TMS-mandated or necessary based on language barriers.

Believe me, I'm just as annoyed as more hardcore fans that for a good number of episodes they tried to make it seem like the show took place in America and that Osaka was Canada. But then again, even the Japanese version has a strange number of European castles propping up in Japan.

The voice acting is pretty decent, though, for the most part. They probably overused Brice Armstrong for extras, though.

I do remember reading that the manga's name was changed to "Case Closed" by Viz to avoid copyright issues with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate. I don't remember reading anything about the name changes though. To be honest, I thought they were pretty insignificant compared to some of 4kids' changes. As far as I recall they only changed Shinichi, Ran, and Ran's father in terms of the main characters (I read the first 10 volumes of the manga several years ago)

In the anime's dub, all the side characters and extras have American names too. They also insist off and on that the show takes place in America and that Osaka is Canada. But aside from the name changes, it doesn't change anything. There aren't any edits or censoring.

Does that mean they give Heiji a Canadian accent? How do they explain all the times they go to Osaka? They go to Canada? Kind of funny given they have Japanese buildings, food, and culture pretty much all over the series; especially all the episodes where they go to Osaka.

Though Conan in general just doesn't work in dubbed form. Too many instances of American characters being major characters, speaking in English half the time, and all the episodes they do go to America and Europe and don't know English. Detective Conan is a very multicultural series, especially steeped in Japanese culture with half the cases.
