I felt kind of bummed indulging on the other thread about 'types of otaku that you dislike', so here's another thread to hopefully balance things out.
So what do I like about some anime fans?
1. I like it when anime fans extend their love for anime to other fields, like a love for Japan, or animation in general.
Plenty of people pick up Japanese, visit Japan, go into the animation industry...it's really great, how a hobby can direct you to RL goals, usually good ones.
2. I like how kinky this fandom is.
I guess I have a love-hate relationship with fetish pandering in anime. I guess it's like romantic relationships -- there's always a line when you feel someone is making themselves too easy, and when it does you start to get turned off. On the other hand, you don't want the person unresponsive and unavailable, either.
I don't think I'd ever be as obsessed with graphic novels or non-Japanese animation because I realize I really like the kink factor. I watched a bit of The Legend of Korra and I felt that it was strangely sanitized, like watching anime without the suggestive maid costumes or whatever (although, I don't know if something along that line appears later). It made me realize how much I do like some of the things I always complain about.
3. It's not without its problems, but I like how it's more welcoming to being 'different' than other areas in my life.
This is the only fandom where I can openly admit to liking hentai, being in love with a cartoon character, and being bisexual. I can't do any of these IRL without facing some form of social censure.
And other fandoms I've been in aren't quite as accepting. I was hanging around reading fan responses to Starcraft 2, and when a female gamer said that she also found Kerrigan attractive, it was met with 'ewww'.
These are just some things I like about anime fandom, and anime fans.

^^ Haven't you ever visited Star Wars forum? The first thread I've seen made me realize that having fetish for horns and tattoos is perfectly understandable.
As I mentioned before the most of the positive things I've seen in anime fandom happened in real world- maybe because there we can fully choose the peoples we meet or maybe because the face to face meetings are rarer therefore more memorable.
To be fair lots of this apply to other fandoms (LOTR, Star Wars from my experience) but we should remind positive traits.
General honesty- can say anyone who had traded via forum
Disinterested help, small favors to people you have never meet- Recent example- I've got a pass to festival from boy with whom I've chatted on forum. Because he was in my city and he could. Or hand-made earrings I've got on one con. Or fanarts as I wish. I also try to do my best, because atmosphere of kindness is infectious
Sharing is Caring- not via torrent because it doesn't take any effort but bringing a suitcase full of mangas across the country because they are off of print and people are interested in them centrality counts.
General atmosphere of secret knowledge- Overleaps with 1st point of Dandelion_rose . Especially during "night's fan's talks" about things that nobody outside the circle knows and cares. Especially with those people who extend their interesting and have a theories about why and by whom.

The porn. Yeah, I said it
I agree with OP. I find it amazing you can find kinky stuff of this stuff everywhere even in the show itself. Doujinshi and other hentai pictures are common as hell, and they're usually really good and high quality. There's so many talented artists out there!
I saw a bit to Korra too, didn't like it, but I looked up to see what fanart it has. It was bad. Really bad. Especially the porn. I don't see how anyone can get their jollies off to what looks like a guys bored doodles on his math notes during class. Maybe they only do it for teh lulz in other fandoms and don't actually see it as porn, but sometimes I feel bad for people who are into other stuff since they'll never have access to the high quality smut anime does. I guess that's why it's an actual business in Japan. I guess having fans of shows who are adults also helps.
MADs are cool too. MMDs, Volcaloids. Lots of awesome creative people make cool videos and programs. There's a lot of creativity among otaku. Viva la otakudom!

I guess one thing I like is What they are does not decide who they are - Fans can range from different ages, gender, and ethnicity. You can find guys who watch cute and sad stuff, and gals who watch action orientated, or even some ecchi shows.
We can be crazy - There is some kinky stuff, things that would totally freak out people, I like how some concepts that anime fans have can really push. They can analyse the topics of homosexual relationships, sexuality of some young people (is that a non creepy way of saying) etc. Who has watched a show about an inhuman creature (undead, animal, robot) and not seen anything wrong with it?

Me too. I like the fact that imagination is so important that it may trump all. I don't myself want to marry a 2D character, but it makes me very happy to live in a corner of the modal multiverse where such a thing is possible.

I can honestly say I never think about fans when it comes to anime, as my interest is in just the shows themselves - so I don't have opinions of pro or con with the fanbase. I admit part of this is due to not even knowing the fanbase, even though I consider myself more than a casual viewer based on how many shows I have watched.
But to add something here, what I think is positive with some anime fans is acceptance of wierd or very "out there" fantastic stories depicted in anime. I myself got completely bored with the kind of entertainment on American TV years ago, and found the wierdness of many anime shows daring & refreshing from my foreign perspective. I can appreciate others having a similar desire to see something different than the mundane, "take no risk" approach to story telling in typical American TV shows.

This thread deserves more replies, especially with how the other thread is going
I like how accepting some fans can be. Seems like a lot of us have some sort of weird fetish or guilty pleasure and anime fans appear generally more accepting of these things.
I might come back with more. I don't have a lot of time right now...

All the obsession with traps and lolis and stuff certainly would probably be met with weird looks in any other fandom.
Hentai/doujinshi is a good example that's exclusive to anime/manga/Japanese video games. I saw a Gyakuten Saiban parody with Final Fantasy 7 characters. A very well-done mock eroge with Gyakuten Saiban-style gameplay. Way to go above and beyond a simple doujinshi or picture set.
Unity is another good example. I guess being able to have all those anime conventions world wide show how dedicated anime fans are. Comiket is the perfect example; an entire fan convention (biggest one in the world) dedicated to things like selling doujinshi and other fan works. Quite impressive.

In general, I like the anime fans here on this site. Most times the discussions are civil, thoughtful, fun and I sometimes learn new things as well.
I don't know many anime friends IRL, but the ones I do know are quite open minded.

Most fans, most, will try any show. And I like that. I have two friends that I have anime nights with and one hesitates but the other will watch anything I suggest.

Cameraderie - Although it has diminished slightly in American fandom, there is still very much a sense that we are all in this together, a kind of mutual community that supports and wishes each other well.
Tolerance - Yes, tolerance of all the wierd, bizarre, cultural, sexual, exhibitionist strange entertainment we all watch, and the respect most anime fans have for each other's right to enjoy said, even if it isn't their thing.
Pensive - Otaku tend to have a lot of very interesting thoughts on things and tend to be quite the philosophers if you can actually get them to open up to you. Sure, sure, occasionally some of them are rather warped, but the amount of thought put into it always makes for interesting conversation, and the perspectives you'll get on issues are often very unique.

I guess it may be due to some attraction with anime to smart nerdy introverts that think a lot on their own, but I notice a lot of anime fans are deep thinkers & crafty debaters in forums like this. Unlike forums I frequent on other subjects, it is less common here to see sloppy posts with poor grammer or nonsensical trains of thought. I feel like if you want to debate with an anime fan, you better put your thinking cap on & be prepared to bring your "A game".

Well, I like that I can talk about my favorite hobby and have people actually understand or have even watched the same shows.

If I have to choose, the thing I like most about anime fans would be their willingness to engage in a conversation regarding anime. There are others who refuse to admit they like anime because of the negative connotation regarding the word 'otaku' but I really like people who openly admit they love anime. What's more, they give me a lot of good recommendations and they even lend me their copies of titles I don't own. I don't have problems with finding people who love anime as much as I do, which is good. But sometimes I understand why others don't like to say they are anime fans - a lot of people can be very judging about this issue, as I've experienced first hand.

The things I like most about otaku are
more than half of the fans aren't massive jerks. It really bugs me when I try to discuss a game I like only for some stupid "CoD is the onlu good game to ever exist" type of guy to flame me to death. At least with the otaku, people are more accepting of other opinions on what they like or dislike more often than not.
They're everywhere. Just makes it easier to make friends sometimes if you find that there is some common ground that you have something like a love for anime in common.
My school has a ton of them Kind of a given, but when you're still in middle school, there's going to be a 99.9% chance that you will find a ton of otaku. Just makes me feel like I'm not crazy
