| Isn't the cost of living sky high in Japan?
What would the equivalent salary of someone in Japan have to be to be comparable to someone in the USA earning $50k a year? I would really love to know. |

| Well they also work 16 hour days at times and they also only get sunday off.
They also sleep at the office and eat there. I don't even think they get a chance to spend there money honestly.. |

That would be around 5 million yen if you figure at 100 yen to the dollar. I don't know if it still holds true now, but a few years ago I remember reading an article that said that the average Japanese auto factory worker earned 11% more than his American counterpart. |

You'd have to look out for travel and utility bills though. Then again, I've heard animators only have enough time out of work to sleep, so perhaps it's the case that their living requirements needn't be high. Of course, saying all this is a little uncaring of me. If anyone can correct me, please do. |

| Well according to the Statistics Bureau the 2008 yearly income for a One-person household was 3.29 million Yen. At current exchange that is about $34,500. So basically if that's the average, young animators are way below it, staffers in their thirties are still below it, and veterans basically right at it. Still as jobs go it doesn't sound like their is very much room for personal growth. I wouldn't go into a job that in 30 years time I will be making essentially the national average.
The only thing I would like to see is what kind of hours these employees are putting in each week to earn these wages. If this is only a part time job to them then it might not be that bad, but if this is what they earn full time it's not so good. Edit: Changed the numbers, was reading wrong column. Do tiny, naked, winged shota boys really pick up the slack and finish the job should an animator fall asleep at her desk, or is the accompanying illustration a lie?
I thought most of the kiddies who say they want to be a famous animator in Japan actually only have "ideas" for anime (to paraphrase Dirty Harry, "Everybody has one") and/or they only want to do character designs at most and they're not particularly interested in doing the grunt work. Yeah, I found a site which covers basic costs of living in the Tokyo wards as of 2006, and the figures make it believable -- for that time period, anyway. Japan is being crushed by the recession, so the prices could probably use an update in many cases. Either way, it's bare bones. |

| I'm not usually one to side with unions. I find them to be parasitic leeches that do everything and anything to hurt the company while protecting even their most worthless members, but this is nuts. You can't live on twelve grand a year. I wish this particular labor group luck. | |||
