Are you a marketing major? Do you have any idea how much film prints cost?
Unless they are absolutely convinced this film is going to do big box office then MGM is right in being cautious!
There's not a huge audience for these films that will pay to see them in theaters. It will likely only break even in licensing costs or make a mild profit after it gets released on home video in the US!
It's brave for a company to take on a film like this and do a limited theatrical release. Most films like this go straight-to-video.
As it is, some of the advance word on this film is none too kind. Having been a fan of anime for close to 20 years I can tell you that the record of anime to videogame adaptations (as awful as those are in general) is STILL better than anime to live action adaptations! |

| Dang! Closest city is Chicago, and I'm not going to make the 6+ hour drive to see it, even though I am interested. I guess I will have to wait for either the DVD, or for it to show up on PPV or on HBO/Showtime/etc. |

And once again Canada is left out of the mix. You'd think Vancouver would at least get it. The Death Note Live-Action movies were a success here and we have a huge asian population as well.
As much as I want to see this, I'm not driving across the border just for a movie. |

Houston's on the list, hurrah!
I am disappointed that it will be such a limited release, although I do understand why. Hopefully it'll do well enough that it'll be made available in more areas in the weeks after its release. |

I'm not surprised Seattle made the list. It seems to be a popular city with movie-industry types.
If advanced buzz isn't all completely negative, I might have to try to remember to go check it out.  |

| Why wouldn't Houston be on the list? it's one of the main big anime centers in America. The 3 main ones being Houston, L.A., and New York. |

While I agree with you for the most part, I really don't see how a live action Blood movie is any more "risky" than, say, the first Underworld film. It's basically a action-horror film.
The other explanation for a very limited release is that the studio thinks it's a bad film as you said. But then, so was Underworld, so I don't see why that should stop someone from releasing to more than 18 screens.
BTW--Speed Racer was unfairly maligned.  |
