Interesting. I'm so dying to see this film. After reading this column I am curious to how American audience will see this film. The idea of a human woman marrying and having children by a non-human is somewhat a taboo ideal. But again we have had films over the years that have covered that subject, pre-Twilight period. But the ideal of humans marrying non-humans is an old mythical concept, especially in Japanese folklore. So it fits right in. Only difference, as you stated is that Asian were-creatures do not follow the rules of transformation and banes found in European folklore. They are beings that exist in a period of time that became the source of nightmares of wary travelers or scary bedtime stories for children. While at the same time being a fantasy filled with a kind of transient beauty. Marrying a non-human could either result in good fortune, but often times it turns out bad. Even if the non-human has good intentions as misfortune could befall both. Which brings up the issues of prejudice and racism.
I had a chance to see some of the artbooks for this film (which I want to pick up at some point) and some of the images are very touching. It's hard to believe this film beats out Summer Wars, but then again it's a different story entirely one that touches the heart. I'm very much looking to seeing it no to mention adding this to my collection of Hosoda features. |

I've been excited for this film ever since it was first announced, simply due to just how AMAZING Summer Wars was, and with this review, I'm glad it sounds like it's going to live up to the hype I've been mentally giving it.
I honestly think I might enjoy Hosoda's films MORE than Ghibli's at this point, though it's hard to say for sure. I certainly enjoyed SW more than a few of Ghibli's entries. At any rate, if anyone can truly surpass Miyazaki, it's Hosoda. |

Is this review based on a preview? The BD isn't out yet, is it? If it is, I want to buy it real soon. I was already looking forward to the new Hosoda movie, but this review is really lauding.
Hmm, I wonder if the Japanese BD has English subtitles? |

I was disappointed with Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and was uninterested in Summer Wars once it came out, but I want to see this one. If it's anything like Bunny Drop but with more wolves, then I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

In answer to the question above, the review is based on a subtitled screening at the London Film Festival. I also saw the film again at the Scotland Loves Anime festival in Edinburgh (the same print, I guess!). For anyone wondering, it wasn't in competition at Scotland Loves Anime because only UK premieres are eligible there, so the London screening beforehand had ruled it out.

This is going to be one hell of a treat when it finally comes here to the states next year its quite obvious that Mike Mcfarland will be the ADR director for the english dub.I'm betting that either Colleen Clinkenbeard or Brina Palencia will be playing the mother of the wolf children it should be interesting to see who ends up playing everyone in the film.

Very nice review. I saw the movie twice in the theater in Japan, and maybe it's because I live so far from my own parents now that it really got to me. Title aside, it's absolutely the mother's movie. We see her fears and her hardships, but also her strength and her joy in her family. She had a line of dialog near the end that was so achingly perfect...
The film left me thinking more than anything about how hard motherhood must be, especially when you have to go it alone...and at the same time how truly wonderful good mothers are. |

But yeah, I can't wait to see this movie. Hosoda is one of my favorite anime directors and look forward to all his future works. This movie seems a little less mainstream (for U.S. viewers) but I am sure I will enjoy it all the same. |

I can't wait to own this movie when it comes out on DVD. It'll be the perfect thing to show my family, friends, and my local anime club!

Saw it at the London Film Festival and thought it was a very good movie however for some reason lacked emotional punch to make me teary with either sadness or joy. I don't know why that didn't happen considering I loved all the characters, maybe I didn't feel genuine danger for the children and as a 22 year old; I wasn't able to sympathise with Hana.
One negative was at times during the beginning, the art style hindered the animation i.e there were things drawn were extremely rough or more precisely "undetailed" and that took me by surprise. |
