I had the same question! I figured it was some sort of scamming but I'm not familiar with the term as it's being used here. So I looked it up on Wikipedia (which may not be the best place but you got to start somewhere) via Google search.

According to Wiki, a Remittance is "a transfer of money by a foreign worker to his or her home country." When I put the term Remittance Scam into Google I got Internet Fraud. After looking that over I think what is going on is that this variation of the Nigerian Scam. Anyway, I was happy to see someone was running a campaign in Japan to try and make older people aware of scams in general. There are plenty of the same demographic in the U.S. who still get duped each year because they're too trusting or they fall for a new scam that's being used.

In fact, the haiku poster posted on this site says something along the lines of "This person says, 'It's me! It's me!' but who is 'me'? A Haiku from the Heart, Tomozo"

Oh, I saw this ad both on the train and at the post office. In other words, don't believe someone on the phone when they say they're your relative and it just happens that their phone number changed.

Now you know why phone books are becoming dead in this country.
