I don't know, I wouldn't really consider the first guy in the first volume, who uses his impending death as an opportunity to get revenge on bullies by raping and killing them as a "noble soul." But you are right that the series has yet to really call the whole system into question. So far, you'd be tempted to think this wasn't so bad an idea. The lives of the people given ikigamis seem to be redeemed in the process, so what's the harm? I'm glad this volume is going to try to tackle some of the harsh negative possibilities of this system.
What I really hope, though, is that this series eventually breaks out of the rigidly episodic format and develop an ongoing plot or subplot about whether or not to change or eliminate the ikigami program. |

I totally agree. I'm hoping for an eventual moral conflict between the people of society and the Ikigami policy. The episodic style of the narrative seems like it will wear a little thin after awhile. I definitely want to see where it goes though. I'm also thinking about checking out the live-action movie. |

Haven't read this series yet, but it
A. Reminds me of that Sliders episode in which the characters find themselves on a world in which everyone participates in a lottery that awards the winner riches and luxury and, after a few days, a lethal injection;
B. What if an ikigami recipient is a pregnant woman or a newlywed? Would the manga go there? The whole concept is awful. |

Despite what Del Rey might think, there's not a lot of point in adding cultural / translation notes if they don't add anything to the experience of reading the book and I can't say I remember noticing anything in this volume that actually required explanation.
The oversize pages and halfway decent paper warrant the extra couple of dollars with or without extraneous notation. |
