Although the OAV is only 3 episodes, I still gave it an Excellent rating. The animation is sleek and stylish fitting the mood of the series very well, the musical score is some of best I've heard (composed by Taku Iwasaki), and the story provides a great pace of action with just enough drama and a little character development to balance it out. The Paper's Japanese voice is really cute too Anime catgrin + sweatdrop.

I've seen all 4 volumes of the TV series that are out right now as well, and I also like it. A lot of the elements in terms of art, animation, music, and action sequences carry over. There's more comedy and character interaction in the series between the three sisters and Sumiregawa-sensei and I find that a to be a very nice addition (and I'm really glad Satsuki Yukino is doing her voice Anime hyper). Overall, I also give R.O.D. the TV an Excellent rating and recommend you check it out after the OAV.

Though I haven't seen the series, I own the OAv and it is just awesome. I mean how can you not love a character named Miss Deep.

I watched the OVA or movie when they aired it on Cartoon Network, I thought it was an awesome, action packed movie. I liked all the characters especially Agent Paper. The villains too were all really cool and different. The plot was good too, definetly a unique movie.

R.O.D the TV however....... Well I am not sure, my friend bought the first volume of it and it was really slow. It also does not focus on Agent Paper from the movie, it focuses on three other paper masters (Who act just like Agent Paper, except for the youngest who hates books) who have to protect an author, who is looking for Agent Paper. I must keep reminding myself that the first volumes of shows do tend to be slower. It will probably end up being really good. I am sure someone on this forum has watched the entire series, I am interested in what they think.

The movie is extremely good. It shows what agent Paper is like and explains her life story a little. The action is great, the story is great, the music is great, so in other words R.O.D. OAV is GREAT Very Happy .

I have gotten the first 4 dvds of R.O.D. the TV series. The TV series is really sweet as well. At first I thought that it would be totally different than the OAVs but I was wrong. The TV series has the same feel and look to it.

Though it doesn't really mention The Paper too much in the beginning. When you get later into the series you will see The Paper become a bigger part of the show. Also you will see how the OAVs tie into the TV series.

So, I recommend both of these.

The series picks up in the second volume. You don't see The Paper until Vol.4, but I like Sumiregawa-sensei and the three sisters. Since the TV series is longer it tends to focus more on character development (thankfully). But don't fret, the action picks up around Vol.3.

Actually, I have long suspected that that name is a pun. A very saucy one, too... read on for spoiler-laced explanation:

spoiler["Miss Deep" is the code name for the character named "Nancy Makuhari" (I've always suspected that that was actually supposed to be read: "Macquarie", but never mind), who is an i-jin developed from the DNA of the original femme fatale spy, Mata Hari (a.k.a. Margaretha Geertruida Zelle).

Mata Hari is Malay for "eye of dawn" (= the Sun), and was an alias she adopted when she took up a career as "exotic dancer" in 1905. She later moved into espionage, which is how she became so (in)famous. Read more about her here.

Where does the saucy pun come in, then? Well, let's just dwell on that "Miss Deep" for a moment, and then consider how a Japanese would understand the name "Mata Hari".

To a Japanese, the sound of "Mata Hari" would, if one were of the correct mindset (e.g. moderately dirty-minded) suggest the words mata ("groin, crotch" - written either as 股 or as 俣) and harigata ("dildo" - written 張形, it is often replaced in more polite conversations by hari, "needle", written 針 or 鍼).

Suddenly, the "Miss Deep" name becomes, ahem, obvious. Smile]

Hope you enjoyed this little excursus...

My thoughts from BC.net of Read or Die after seeing it:

I gotta tell ya, I'm a little disapponted with Read or Die. I've been waiting since May to watch it, and it didn't live up to expectations. Now, it seemed UNEDITED spoiler[(the actions of sexually suggestive Ms. Deep "sounds like a pornstar's name") and bloody, so that was a plus. However, some of the characters weren't fleshed out enough for my liking like Mr. Drake (even Yomiko to a certain degree), and Drake also seems to be the throw-in American tough guy . . . hell, they might as well made him black, but that meant he would've had to die nonsensically at the end Rolling Eyes. Though the story does have it's twists and turns, it's not the Wolf's Rain ending here. I'm sorry but to me this ending seemed a tad incomplete. I'll give it a 2 out of 4 because I felt it could've been MUCH BETTER.

EDIT: Now, I was informed on [as] of this:

Dokusensha (from [as] boards) wrote this:

Actually the main reason for the plot holes in the OVA is the fact that its . . . well . . . an OVA. It was made for people who have seen the manga. When watching it your supposed to have prior knowledge of the characters and settings (Like most OVAs)It's really just eye candy for fans, which is why people love it.

I guess he has a point. But still, some things are inexecusable. I can handle mass America-bashing in a cartoon (heck, I get a kick out of it), but geez, it's like the producers went out to insert some shot at the U.S. every 7 minutes. Also, for some reason Yomiko's demeanor rubbed me the wrong way, I just hated how one second she's borderline Officer Mihoshi and then turns Lara Croft. Anyway I just had some mad hopes for the OVA that went unrealized.]

EDIT: To be fair, I realize I should read the mangas first. I will track 'em down and alter this review.
FUTHER EDIT: . . . and they don't exist in English. Peachy Rolling Eyes.

She even refers to this in the Dub:

Miss Deep - always sounded like a porn star to me

The TV series gets better as it progresses, with the last three or four being really good.

I have to admit, that i found the first few a bit slow, but I'm glad i stuck with it.

I really enjoy the R.O.D movie DVD, although I still haven't saved up enough money for the TV series, so I really can't comment on that one.

R.O.D has some really clean and crisp animation and use of colours that made it stand out when I first viewed it. The storyline isn't something you see over and over again, so its originality is something worth mentioning when recommending it to others.

I kind of got into ROD backwards. I watched the TV series first (all that's available so far), and then saw the OVA (movie) on Cartoon Network later. I have to say I like the TV series better, although there are things a liked a lot about both. The animation and characters designs are very well done, and pleasing to look at. I especially like the way the characters pose and move in the TV series. There is more character development in the TV series, and the humor is more subtle. The character of Nenene is brilliant! I rated both the series and movie Excellent.

The OVA was awesome, and the TV series is also very good, at least from the 16 episodes I've seen of it anyway, really looking forward to volume 5 on the 15th.

There is no movie. Just the OVA and the TV series. Whenever someone says "movie" in the context of R.O.D., just replace it with "OVA" to alleviate the confusion.

I really don't think R.O.D. is as great as everyone else seems to think it is.

Ditto. But then I did say I'd try to find out more on the background story (read previous post).
