I think what we're seeing here is the fact that fights can't be handled well in prose form with any amount of detail. You'd probably see fights as gruesome as in manga if that weren't the case.

Indeed. For example Slayers was originally a light novel, as was Full Metal Panic.

You need to read more prose if you believe that. Smile IMO Index isn't any less brutal than Bleach in most regards.
