I immediately thought of Princess Tutu when I read this comic too.

Thank you, Mrs. Sevakis. I still remember how as a 20-something male I tried to draw as little attention to myself as possible when purchasing the latest volume of Magical Stage Fancy Lala at Media Play.
That show was worth the embarrassment, though, thankfully.

An interesting dilemma. One one side, the anime makers are trying to entice their own market and do so with titles they may find interesting, comical, etc.
Yet on the other side of the Pacific, fans will bitch and moan these titles be changed for its market, because it's not descriptive of the Japanese version.
There's simply no way to win here. I can't, for the love of me, see Media Blasters releasing "The Girl from the Sea" being reasonably acceptable to the title "Squid Girl" without hate.
I'm reminded of the "I hate loli" comments by fans who then turned their hate on FUNimation, possibly reading the comments, when they took to editing a scene they felt fans would find offensive.

I know when ever I say "Creamy Mami is my favorite magical girl" I get some strange looks.
I was even at a convention dealers room and the dude I bought a Creamy Mami CD at was like "so...is that like porn or what?"

Let's remember it could be even worse. Original title of Bodacious Space Pirates is Mini-skirted Space Pirates. Surely that'd made wonders...
And I will not talk about Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles... I remember explaining that no, there is no character called "Tsubasa" at all, they are just stupid wings, alright?

Well, those two are supposed to be screwball comedies, so silly titles are appropriate there.

Uh.... I'm assuming this was before the series finished?

Ouran High School Host Club was rather difficult to explain to my mom because she somehow knew about what a real host club was, in a rather exaggerated manner without knowing anything else. I convinced her to watch an episode, and she found it hilarious.

My top three "Wait, it's not what it sounds like" all got mentioned straight away: Princess Tutu, Kiddy Grade, and Tiger and Bunny.
I'd put Puella Magi Madoka Magica in a slightly different category, for titles which still require extra explanation but don't actively drive people away. Also in this category: Hunter x Hunter, Steins;Gate, and anything else with random unpronounced decorative symbols or letters in it.

When I read this comic, I thought "I guess I've must never encountered an anime with an odd title. That was unlikely considering the sheer amount of anime I'm familiar with. Turns out, after reading comments here, I'm just so used to anime titles I can't tell they're odd anymore.

Speed Grapher is sort of appropriate. The Graflex Speed Graphic was the standard press camera from 1920 – 1960’s. It’s the camera that newspaper photographers use in old movies and television shows but not in the anime.

I seem to recall hearing that the xxx is actually supposed to be silent, leaving it pronounced simply as "holic" which makes a fair amount of sense when you consider the series. (Think "-holic", as in "alcoholic", "chocoholic", etc.) |
Oh, I know. I always say the series as "holic" because it is supposed to be silent.
But when people see the manga in my hands or when I brought the anime into work to watch, the first thing I usually hear before I explain it is "Is that a porn cartoon?".

This brings back a lot of memories, especially when I first got into collecting anime and I was trying to explain to my parents on what anime was.
The second anime title that I ever bought was Bubblegum Crisis. Trying to explain that one to my father was a pain to say the least.

I had a look at the comic and I admit some English titles are a little silly. It kinda makes it hard to recommend any really good anime titles with titles like "Kiddy Grade,""Tiger and Bunny,"and other stuff like that. For example,"Tiger and Bunny" could be suggestive of a kiddie cartoon in which a rabbit is friends with a tiger or something like that.
I think that the people who import this stuff should work at getting better titles for this stuff so that people like me aren't embarrassed about recommending a certain anime to our friends and family.
