I was wondering why Yuna was chosen as a silhouette also, because if you are into anime, you are not necessarily into games.

Japanese RPGs probably have a healthy amount of crossover with anime. Never played FFX and I recognized the silhouette.

Indeed, only two of my anime buddies play the FF games (one of whom is generous enough to let me play FF XIII whenever I come over, since I only have a PS2), yet all of my buddies could tell you who Yuna is. Certain FF knowledge is just expected, I guess. Wink

Actually, I haven't started X yet, I'm still playing XII and mean to finish it sometime before I start X. Too much level-grinding for me, I preferred it when non-used characters automatically leveled up, since I like my characters to be well-leveled and even throughout the party, this only means twice the work. Sad

I've never played any FF at all, except for 10 minutes of the new game a couple weeks ago.

But I have been to tons of cons, averaging about 5 per year since about 2002. I recognize FF characters entirely thanks to the zillions of FF cosplayers at anime conventions, so I assumed there was a lot of crossover in the community. Where I might be wrong is that forumgoers don't necessarily go to conventions!

Videogames rely on great character design and employ a lot of animation techniques. Arguably there is more character establishment in games through character design than through other means (dialog, story, etc.).

Anyway, it's not as much about recognition as it is distinctiveness. Yuna and Sailor Moon are very distinct. There's no mistaking who they are. I also think Lime from Saber Marionette J has a great design; bright colors, props, and a strong profile.

The first is not an anime character. It is Yuna from Final Fantasy X-2

Well that explains it because although I am an ardent anime fan, I am not into gaming at all (short of sports games for the PS3).
