Glad to see some positives about this anime. So far anyone I asked told me it was bad, although maybe I will check it out now.

I... was actually scared to start this series, honestly. I was worried that it would be nothing but a loli-Ikki Tousen-vamp hybrid inheriting all of it's weaknesses.
But, I walked away very pleased. I haven't seen many vamp series as I'm not a super HUGE fan of the genre, but I've seen enough to know good and bad, and Bund endlessly impressed me.

As for Carl's review... All I can say, is that Carl's writing and well-balanced opinions NEVER cease to amaze me.
A "B" for the story fits the bill right, it's certainly better than it looks, it never stumbled (too far) into the realm of queesy.
I actually thought Carl would hate this show, but, like the show, I was surprised!

I really look forward to checking this one out, being a big Vampire fan. However I just have to say that I find the name "Mina Tepes" incredibly stupid. It's like a punch in the face every time I read it. Yes, I get it. You read Dracula. Now be creative and think of your own damn names for you characters. *ugh* But that's really beside the point. I'll check it out at first opportunity. Thanks for the review!

(But hey, it could be worse. At least the naming isn't quite as bad as "Panty and Stocking"...)

I'd squeeze toward the B-/C range but the review is accurate. I do have to note that the "Style over substance" is a SHAFT thing that just ain't going away.

I watched the first... 2 episdoes (maybe 3?) but I just couldn't get around the whole vampires turning into animals/creatures thing. The first episode was a lizard and I think the second episode was a spider. It was just too stupid for me to take in. I mean, sure, Alucard has his dog form, but he rarely uses it.

This was a colorful and well articulated review. I have watched the first episode, and read most of the manga ( I have un-apologetically enjoyed the manga, thus far), and look forward to viewing the rest of the series when the opportunity arises. Thank you for the great review.

it's nice to see this get the rating it did. I checked it out just to see what the fuss is about despite the fact I'm typically turned off by loli fanservice (heck, the only reason I actually did watch was because FUNi's streams cut out some of it) and found I actually liked it. heck, I was left wishing there was more (watch me go running to read the manga now, once the bookstore gets it in). I love horror movies so I'm sure that's part of why I liked it like I did, altho I will be the first to agree with the statement it's not for everyone. it's still pretty damn good, better than I expected by a longshot. it's a series that is what it is, but it's good at being what it is. I'd watch it again readily.

What? No egregious loli-bashing? This can't be ANN. Can't be. As a loli fan myself, I generally ignore the petty moralism injected into all the reviews here, but this is a pleasant surprise.

maybe the lack of loli-bashing has to do with the fact that once you get past the lolicon elements you actually have a halfway decent horror story to enjoy. I know that's what had me wanting to watch more (okay, and I have a bit of a werewolf fetish, when there's a bishonen werewolf involved I'll ignore some stuff I like less, but that still doesn't mean I'll adore the series like I did in this case).

Did they ever get on track or did they just spin around with their finger up their backsides, denying this show the proper Xanatos Speed Chess come DBZ Fighting that the manga blew me away with?

This anime is potentially better than Vampire Knight, if only they make it a 24 episodes with properly extended storytelling they would make a masterpiece. This is not a lollicon show, this is a vampire show, a great one at that, and shines through actors and story following a good pace while still compacted in a 12 episodes is atop my list. I'm very positive about this anime series which I like a lot.

What the heck, Mina Tepes is legend so I was really happy they represented her personality, frightening and kind, so well in the anime and manga.

I liked it I wouldn't necessarily watch the first season a second time but if they made a Second season I would watch it. I thought the music was good the animation was extremely well done though some of the edits made no sense to me. Also I didn't see in the end what the big deal was with all the Lolicon stuff I didn't notice it if anything for me at least even though Mina is not drawn as a Moé character I ended up having pretty strong Moé feelings about her. I don't know after having watched the entire first season I came away thinking (for me at least.) The only way you could find something sexual about some of the scenes involving Mina Tepes is if you had a dirty mind to begin with but that's just my take.

Wow, that's a much better review (in terms of the review itself, not the "score" VB got) than I expected to see for this show. I recently watched the whole thing in the span of a couple days after hearing (way late) about all the stink raised about Funimations edits. The first two episodes were significant hurdles to get over (even for someone rather boring-first-episode- and loli-tollerant) but the show got a lot more interesting after that.

As mentioned in the review, the parts where Mina puts people in their place (or at least does her darndest to try) were probably the reoccurring highlights of the show that kept me watching. The instances involving some fighting in particular were great, but even the ones with just dialog contained sufficient proverbial bitchslapping. She really is a pretty well done character.

I swear, though, by the time the last episode was rolling, I was about ready to punch my screen if I saw another camera zoom in on someone's eye.

No mention in the review of the annoying tertiary romantic interest, eh? Well, I guess that's sort of included in the mention of absolute lack of subtlety.

I have to admit, my opinion of Dance in the Vampire Bund seems to pretty much parallel the review. There's a laughably camp element to the show that's fun, and there's a great feel and energy to the direction, but the show always feels about two steps away from greatness.

Specifically, I do feel the show desperately needed to choose its focal point. For the life of me, I'm still trying to determine what the show was about. Was it Mina's establishment of the bund? Was it Akira regaining his memories? Was it vampiric politics, teen romance, or vengeance for past sins? I'm not thoroughly convinced the director knew what his story was.

Secondly, and all apologies to the loli fans amongst us, but why was it necessary from a story perspective for Mina to have a sub-High School age body?
