Most freedom fighters must be rolling in the graves.

This makes me be ashamed of liking anime even, it's really sad that most politicians get paid by big corporations, is this what you really you people call freedom? how sad.

Really a bad day in history. And a disgusting one too
The thing about this, is that cartoons are NOT children.

Cartoons and imaginary beings. Doesn't even matter if they ban tho..you can't stop the people that like it from IMAGINING it. ,so might as well be sane and realize it's not REAL people and leave it alone

Yeah, have to agree with the irony of you using an Utena avatar while supporting this bill. One of the provisions of this bill limited not just nudity/sexuality but actual subject matter, including incest and rape, from being in comic books that minors could read. Since Utena openly deals with both, forget about its target audience (teenage girls) ever getting to watch it!

I mean, yes, tighten up restrictions on selling pornography to minors, even porn that doesn't involve real people. But make your definitions incomprehensible and open to misuse, and the start telling writers what subject matter they can choose? That is unacceptable.

Oh look. Someone else who doesn't know what the bill actually entails.

(Yeah, that Utena avatar of yours? Probably could be censored)

My sentiments exactly. I honestly have no idea how anyone could possibly justify the existence of titles like kodomo no jikan or kiss x sis..

Aren't you sick to death of yet one more law being created when there are already perfectly good laws on the books?
The article points out there is already a law in place to prevent harmful material from getting into the hands of minors. This is just an excuse for a new batch of politicians to be able to say they voted to protect family values. It's still the political pandering you're complaining about.
It seems as though every time something bad happens to someone with family, the bereaved survivors have to push for a new law. There are tons of laws already on the books that probably can apply. Look at California having to pass that no talking on cell phones law when it's already illegal to do anything distracting while driving. If you can't eat & drive, you shouldn't be eating & driving. We don't need 200 new laws every year. In what universe does reading a text while one is supposed to be keeping one's eyes on the road make sense?
And there are lots of laws on the books in the US & in Japan to protect minors from obscene material.

If I want to draw a 5 yr old getting eaten by wolves, it's my right. No real child is harmed so it can't be considered child abuse. Granted, my art skills are stick-figures, so unless I label it "5-yr-old being eaten by wolves" no one would probably know.
It's like we're moving backwards believing what one does to a picture can somehow affect living beings.

The real problem is that this bill is the Mum-ra of dumb political bills. Every time it gets struck down, sure as sure can be, someone will pop it right back in.

For as long as dumb politicians exist, NONEXISTNT YOUTH BILL LIVES!

FREEDOM OF SPEECH LIVES!!!

Let this be a lesson to other idiots who try to censor, and dictate what and what not is deemed to be freedom of speech.

Don't use that lesbian-underage-sexually-active avatar when you say that kind of things... You are making a fool of yourself.

The governing party of Japan changed from the LDP to the DPJ. LDP is the party that supports the Youth Bill as well as exporting anime/manga under ex-Prime Minister Taro Aso. I guess kinda like ex-NYC Mayor Guiliani wanting to promote Times Square but cleaning it up to be family-friendly.

Right. And killing their creativeness in the process. Something you can expect from politicians, specially right-wing ones.

Seems a bit stupid to allow minors to purchase pornography still, if that is indeed happening, but if you're going to try lumping fairly sensible ideas in with vague Authoritarian drivel then no wonder "justice" doesn't always prevail.

Frankly i'm surprised this law was defeated, I've got so used to modern nations passing anything with "PROTECT THE WHINY ANNOYING CHILDREN" printed in large letters on the front, that it is refreshing to see government that considers democracy and the logical observation of liberty and freedom of expression more important than emotional knee jerk reactions, aimed at an industry that actually exists primarily and necessarily to mirror the darker side of society.

Japan truly is an interesting nation sometimes, being both progressive and conservative with its values at once. How long until their current balance tips, though?

Personally this whole issue is another reason to despise the Moe surge in the anime industry. The perversion that surrounds the genre whips emotional people into a frenzy, and they then end up trying to stop the "problem" in a way that affects the creative and expressive stuff more negatively than it does the commercial fodder, which will then pursue some new shallow agenda.

Let's hope the trend dies soon enough for the overzealous activists to forget about their glorious mission of banning what we are allowed to imagine.

lol personally even I find this to be a topic that can't be touched, cause no matter how you argue it, you either look like a conservative jackass...or a sicko. Best to stay completely neutral and indifferent!

On June 4, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki issued a statement about the bill on the studio's official blog. Suzuki declared that regardless of the outcome of the revision bill, Studio Ghibli will continue to create works based on what it believes in.

Ok, that sounds more Ghibli to me.
