TheODE adds words based on actual use of it, basicaly if it gets used in enough print works showing contextualy how it's used/ what it means then they'll add it.
The OED does a lot more reasearch on the actual origins of the words (and when they entered use). So takes much longer to update, which they only do a few letters at a time.

Oxford Dictionary of English (not to be confused with the much-older and much-longer Oxford English Dictionary)

And that pretty much sums up the language right there.

Though this is really isn't that great an announcement... 23 points for a 10-letter word?

Since the word is in fact real and does have a clear definition, this makes sense that the word would eventually be added to a dictionary.

Also, since this is a pretty big ordeal in Japan and other places as well (just not in that definition or word) but there also has been a anime/manga about a hikiomori person, so it's a real issue.

Though I still have a Merriam Webster book that is several years old, but is still in great shape and the pages are still readable. Since the book is still in great shape and still somewhat modern, there really is no point in buying a newer version.

Same here! Very Happy

I hope you two aren't glad to be such, because it's not a good thing and looks to be a mental health issue.

A fellow scrabble player :]

But really shut in does basically mean the same thing, though I guess it's still kind of cool.

I thought it was pretty funny, as well. But is it even a playable word? How many K's are in the current Scrabble set?

Don't like the way the pronunciation is depicted, but what can you expect.
