I, for one, welcome our Yamato remake masters.

Or, I did, until this.

Love that classic Yamato score, though. Domel's looking pretty boss, too.

This remake is continuing to impress me. I grew up watching Star Blazers and the remake is giving me the same feelings that I had as a nine-year old watching it for the first time.

It's a bit weird seeing Gatlantis ships in this version, I can't wait to see how it's explained!

Yamato 2199 BD 1 was one of the very rare blind-buys that I've made. I hadn't watched any PVs/trailers and I didn't know who was involved on the production/cast side of things. For better or worse, I went for it only because of the name. It's also a slightly easier choice when it comes with subtitles, though. I've been fairly impressed with the story and animation so far. More people should be buying the Blu-rays. ^^ I didn't notice any 2199 discussion on the anime branch of the ANN forum, so it doesn't seem as though anyone's watching. Or did I just do a crappy job searching?

Somehow I managed to not grow up watching Star Blazers. It was on TV in the area, and I was a cartoon watcher, but I managed to miss catching even a glimpse of that adaptation. I remember seeing a few episodes of both Battle of the Planets and G-Force, but that might have been about it until Robotech came along.

I'll probably be placing an order for the fourth Yamato 2199 BD some time next month (along with a few other Blu-rays), since it comes out in late February.

I received the third bluray of Yamato 2199 the other day. I loved the original series so was looking forward to this remake. The first two blurays were amazing. However, the third one started slow and it wasn't until the last episode that it finally hit its top quality stripes. At the beginning it didn't have the same production values with some of the character designs being uneven. But I can't wait for the fourth bluray in Feburary.

It's interesting that they keep the same storyline yet tweak it so as to still surprise you and keeping an interest I what is to come next.

Good to see there are fans of this show out there.

It looks to me like the authors of 2199 are adopting an idea that a number of fans, including Robert Fenelon and and Martin King, thought about back in the Star Blazers Day. Namely that after the 2nd season episode where the revived Desslok greets Prince Zordar and says "I have heard of you and the power of the Comet Empire", they speculated that the real reason for Gamilon appearing to have developed all these mad science weapons was because they knew the Comet was coming and were trying to come up with anything they could throw at it. Rob said he asked Martin, "But still, how you do you fight what's practically a mobile dwarf star?" To which Martin replied, "I dunno, how well would the Comet Empire do if you threw a few artificial suns at at? Or maybe SMITE-d a bunch of Desslok mines into the lower section docking bay? Or sicced Ecto-gas on the upper city energy shield?"

Also remember that at several points in the series we hear about other Gamilon battles other than Earth. Lysis is given a medal by Desslok in Star Blazers after fighting on "the advance front lines". The 4 carrier captains who work with Lysis in the Rainbow Galaxy battle all come from other battlefields. Who the heck are they fighting out there??

Looks like here in 2199 they're stating outright Gamilon is already fighting the fringes of the advancing wave of the Comet Empire. "Toward the great Magellanic Cloud have only the first fingers of Zordar's hand yet been stretched!"

How did you find it "slow"? Admittedly, Episode 9 where spoiler[Analyser activates Alter, the Gamilan battle droid and the events on ship follow the story told on the ship's radio] might not be to everyone's tastes, but I found it an interesting character development episode for Analyser (whose character was there largely as comic relief in the original), and posed an interesting philosophical question.

Episode 7 spoiler[(the line-crossing party)] was a key event in the original series and provided a lot of character development for some of the new characters as well as fleshed out characters that in the original series didn't get any character development at all (notably supporting characters like spoiler[ Kato Saburo and Yamamoto Akira from the Black Tiger squadron [the reimagining of the latter is an additional interesting plot point IMO] ]).

The remaining Episode 8 I thought did a fantastic job of melding several events from different episodes spoiler[(Desler Mines, the energy cloud, and the wishing star, which they cleverly turned into Gliese 581, the nearest known star with planets that in real life have been deemed potentially life-supporting Earth-type planets and provided some potential developments with Sanada's offsider Kaoru). The only thing I partially didn't like from the episode was the demise of Schulz and Ganz from the Gamilan Pluto base - partially because the guy's character development (another one who didn't have any in the original) made you sympathise with his plight and thought that maybe in his position he at least deserved a spectacular death in battle - but I guess it also showed a fairly realistic result - they got too close to the star chasing Yamato and it cost them. ]

As for the quality, I can't say I noticed any fall in the unevenness that you're alluding to. I'll have to rewatch it to look for it once I get the disc back off a friend I loaned it to.

Interesting collection of points. A few I'd like to comment on:

(1) The limitation with the Ecto-gas is that if it tries to absorb a far superior energy source (e.g. a star or Gatlantis' comet facade, which we see absorbing or vaporising asteroids in its path) it will be overwhelmed and consumed. Assuming that Gatlantis has actually ever needed to unmask from the comet disguise before the battle for Earth in Yamato II, it would depend on how big a sample of Ecto-gas you're talking about, it would need to be pretty darn big not to get absorbed by the upper shield.

(2) It certainly looks like they're implying that the Gatlantean/Comet Empire is attempting to conquer Gamilan space, and such a scenario would make an interesting twist explaining how the two become allies.

(3) It certainly looks like they're implying that all of the fleet commanders to be brought together under Domel might be fighting various fronts against Gatlantis.

I've been fortunate (via a friend) to be able watch this series despite not having a Blue-Ray player. Frankly i find this to be best Science Fiction release of the year which ironicly hasn't been seen by many in US.

Quality, the story, and care making this top notch series while respecting the old series if not doing it better. I love this, it breaks my heart the its not in the US darn Bandai.

Give it time. Yamato/Star Blazers was a pioneer in anime outside Japan and it has a huge following in a number of countries around the world, including the US and Japan. I would be very surprised if this didn't get picked up in the US (if it hasn't already and there are restrictions on when the licensee can announce it). Due to its unusual release format (cinemas -> DVD/Blu-Ray -> eventual TV airing most likely after the series is complete) it will most likely be 2014 before we see it outside Japan. Since Funimation picked up the Yamato Resurrection movie earlier in the year, I'm guessing they also have their eyes on 2199 if they don't already have the licence.

Yamato already has a sizable fan base throughout the world courtesy of Star Blazers. The fact that they have updated the story with movie-quality animation and filled in the holes in the plot as well as introduce some interesting new stories while more than doing the original justice, will only add to its fanbase. For those who can't pay Japanese prices or need DVD, it will be worth the wait and then some.
