Great show, guys. Love the interview.

Cue irony. I wrote a short story similar Josh's TT concept show. Mine is called Night Docs, after the old false KKK night doctor myths (wiki Night Doctor if you must), of U.S black people being abducted on the streets at night (and instead of them disappearing), they were healed and let go, but couldn't reveal the indentity of their healers as a condition. A bit Black Jack/Flatliners, but more original than most of the stuff pushed out these days.

Don't worry. I won't chase you, as my stuff has it own twists and differences.

I love the Trauma games, so I'll look forward to seeing your show. I'm also looking forward to your Cowboy Bebop movie, when many are ready to shoot it to pieces with pessimistic bullets, before its even out.

Skip Beat could totally work, but they would have to change a lot and fans would whine! The series is rather steeped in the machine that is the Japanese entertainment industry, so a lot of the tone and some of the structure might have to change. Plus they'd have to make Kyoko 18 =P Not to mention cutting it into a movie with a satisfying ending might prove difficult. Maybe if they only went as far as spoiler[the music video she does with Sho], and give it more of a loose, "she learned something, and now she'll move on!" ending, instead of a more firm, everything-set-in-stone ending.

If I wrote scripts I'd jump on that, actually. Think of the sell: "It's like High School Musical meets Legally Blond!..."

_V_: Oh, that was you! I appreciate the sentiment. Thanks Smile

Aaand it may seem cheap but I'm gonna second/third/fourth/whatever Black Lagoon for a Hollywood deal; I've always thought it would play well here. Kinda wish it had made it to [adult swim], actually. Maybe they balked at the spoiler[incestuous goth loli twin murderers]. Or Balalaika spoiler[QCing kiddy porn].

As for the extra credit question, I think Serial Experiments: Lain could be adapted into a very cool and rather creepy movie. Considering that computers travel with us wherever we go now, the script could be adjusted in interesting ways. It would need a skillful scriptwriter and a director who understands cyberpunk and phobic dystopia. What made the anime so memorable is that every scene seemed to be soaked in paranoia sauce. It could make a very intense movie.

YES 100% agree with this. Good call!

People have been complaining about the Eden of the East ending? I thought it was perfectly acceptable myself; although I do look forward to the chance to watch the movies.

Oh and Gia, I've got the Selaco ring tone and message tone on my Nexus One. Smile I'll probably keep them for years, considering that I used the CTU ringtone from 24 for about three and a half.

Now to geek out about movie adaptations...

Another vote for Black Lagoon here. Piracy continues to be topical, and it's packed with action. I'd think that this is an easy adaptation, insofar as that can be said.

... um, FLAG?

Looking through my favorites, I realize that many of my favorite series would not work well in a movie format, but FLAG might.

Oh wow, yes, I second that. Joshua, this is how you pitch it: Transformers meets The Hurt Locker. Also, at 13 episodes this isn't a huge ask to convert to a feature-length film like a long-running manga.

Area 88.

Not Area 88, but thank you for reminding me of Yukikaze. Here's the pitch on this one: Top Gun meets Independence Day. Again, it's a reasonable conversion at only six 45-minute episodes.

Overall, it was great hearing from Joshua. I'm feeling more confident about Cowboy Bebop's viability; it certainly has the potential to appeal to a mass-market audience, I just wasn't sure about the effort to get it to production--but he sounded invested. The discussion of adaptations in general was also informative.

Add: please get Trauma Center out the door. My parents are pretty big fans of medical procedurals, and I look forward to telling them that they are watching a show based on a Japanese video game franchise with no story.

One thing that makes fitting the "size" of the story to a movie a lot easier is if there is a movie in a three to seven episode arc rather than a full series.

That's the weakness of many of my favorite movies for film adaptation. I'll have to agree with the people putting out Serial Experiments Lain. I'm not so sure how much of Last Exile could be fit.

I would recommend stuff I'd like to see as a live action flick but everything I would like to see would probably fail or be too expensive to produce. Realistically I don't think most anime titles would work as a live action Hollywood movie, even if they did I don't see them making money. Only exception I can think of that could probably be successful and make money would be a live action Ghost in the Shell. It seems to naturally work for a live action adaptation and be comfortable enough to be accepted by a widespread American audience. Another one would be Naoki Urasawa's Monster.

Also good to hear Zac approves of Eden of the East, was on the fence about that one so I might go ahead and pick that up now to check out.

My Suggestion? Big O. The show had plenty of western elements, and would really benefit from the advances in CG animation. Play up the noir angle, slap together a suitably twisted storyline and boom! fun for all ages (or at least various nerd demographics).

Kakurenbo

How do you make a full-length Hollywood movie out of that?

Actually it could work. If there's anything "Kakurenbo" could have benefited from it's more depth and content. It was an interesting short title, but there was definitely more happening there than was presented in the film, and the audience was just kind of left to fill in the banks when it came to all of that. I could definitely see a good 90 or 105 minute film running with that premise and building on it.

Plus, it would be more acceptable I imagine than others. It's no secret that anime fans tend to be less than receptive about Hollywood adaptations of anime titles. Something like "Kakurenbo" is not only obscure, but the limited material and room for interpretation gives the studio some breathing room when developing the content since they would obviously have to do so in order to make a feature film. They wouldn't be under as much pressure from the purists due to the necessity of interpretation and additional material due to the source. Really, something like "Kakurenbo" would be arguably the ideal choice.

Extra credit: if you comment on this episode, include in your notes what anime you think would make a great live-action adaptation. Joshua is listening!

Alrighty then! First off, I'd like to say how excited and optimistic I am about the Furuba movie. If nothing else, I greatly enjoyed the animals in Narnia, so I think it'd be a wonderful thing to see Tohru and everyone on the big screen!! I don't have any actors/actresses in mind for the cast, but whoever ends up in the roles I'm hoping for the best. Anime catgrin

I'm a huge fan of Yuji Iawahara's works, and I instant I sat down and read the first vol. of his King of Thorn horror survival series, I thought, "This could be a Hollywood movie!"
Another of his series that I loved was the more recent school-life/supernatural Cat Paradise, which I'd probably like to see made into a movie more than KoT simply because it features pet cats and the bonds they share with their owners prominently.

Either of those would make me overwhelmingly happy to see made into live action films, even if they had to be broken up into several movies (That might even work better since they're both 5-6 vols. in all). Anime hyper KoT is something a bit different by the end half of the story, while CP is a bunch of tried-and-true tropes that still manage to be wholly entertaining and their characters, endearing.

Personally, I do think an Americanized Hollywood version of Strike Witches would still be awesome.

That Trauma Team series actually sounds really interesting. I hope it gets made.

Vis a vis Cowboy Bebop, I always thought this was one of those adaptations that could really work creativally. Godspeed!

As for anime or manga live action adaptations: Monster live-action series. Just change Tenma into an American guy and you wouldn't even have to change anything else.

I really enjoyed this episode, I normally don't find the second section that interesting.

I love fruits basket some I'm interested in how that could possibly be done. Though I think that since its such a character based series it would be very important to get the main cast right.

And I'm glad you guys liked Eden of east, though I'm disapointed by the sound of the movies. (I watched the series fansubbed, but I'm still holding out for the movies)

How about this for a Fruits Basket pitch: "Can love overcome an age-old curse? In a world where star-crossed lovers are divided by fate, what's a girl to do when even Destiny and the Signs refuse to align?"

Shenl742: I'd be all for an Eden of the East film.
