From what I read, it seems that both Bandai and Namco tried to merge with other companies in the past, but wasn't able to due to different cultures and product lines. It seems that this might be a match made in heaven because Bandai is strong in characterizations and Namco is strong in technology, and the merge compromises the two companies' weaknesses. Considering that other companies such as Nintendo and Electronic Arts are more technologically advanced, this merger was necessary for Bandai to compete in a maturing industry. However, at this point, nothing is yet official as the report states that the merger will take place on Sept. 29, and it's unclear whether this will have a positive or negative effect for both parties in the mid- to long-term financial period.

I'm curious about the following:

1. How will the merger affect Bandai America in terms of licensing/distributing anime in North America?

2. How will the merger affect Bandai's ability to license and distribute anime globally? Will they be more pro-active in licensing anime?

My opinion? Bandai clearly has a good thing going with anime on both sides of the pacific. This is an area that will probably remain unaffected for the most part. I suspect it will help the overall video game division more. They can pool their collective talents together here more and market things more effectively.

So basicly Namco will now have a stronger merchandise presence and Bandai will have a stronger video game presence. Aside from some sort of name change (though probably nothing drastic) we probably wont really notice too much; Bandai will have better video games and Namco will have more toys.

Funny, and here I thought Bandai was already Japan's number 2 toy manufacturer (or even the number one). Confused
