Well, December is done, but as for the year wrap up, I'd rather do that when I'm at home and can spend some time going over things in more detail. So, here's this month's expenses:

Anime: $314.60
Manga: $118.14
Figures: $327.02
Misc: $186.16

December total: $945.92

The Miscellaneous this time includes the ticket to see the Madoka movies, and the other item was the P.O.P guide book with exclusive, super rare, ultra limited, extremely hot Nami figure. Since it came with a figure, I wasn't sure if I should include it in my figure section, but ultimately decided since it's a hybrid of guidebook and figure that it should go in miscellaneous. Anyways, barely kept it under $1000 this month, but soon my expenses should start going down. Maybe one of these months I can have one of these mythical under $100 months that I see some people manage to have.

@ Sailor S
The last time I had an under $100 month was back in the first months I collected, probably late 1997 or early 1998. I think the secret to an under $100 month is not having any more money to spend. A few people may have "other priorities" (like kids and such) but they should know better. Very Happy

I had a couple of <£100 months at the beginning of the year, but money was very very tight for me then and I needed to eat as well...

I think it's close enough to the end of the month to go ahead and do the tally for December.

Anime: $162.69
Manga: $104.98
Figures: $95.04
Total: $362.71

I ended up going over for my annual pleasure expenditures this year by about $185, although that includes a few non-anime/manga costs as well. Not too bad overall though.

Since I doubt anything will come in tomorrow I'll tally up for the month and year.

Manga: 19 volumes for $168.48
one Artbook for $27.99
one novel for $8.39
Figures: 3 for $153.97
DVDs: 12 for $306.85
Blurays 5 for $254.91
CDs 6 for $11.34 (from the TRSI sale)
Tax: $32.83
Total for December: $1010.74
This makes December a bit above avarage. A lot of new anime came out this month and TRSIs sales didn't help.

Total for 2012: $8895.98
this included:
267 volumes of manga
58 DVDs
51 Blurays
26 Figures
4 Lithographs (art prints)
5 decks of playing cards
7 light novels
1 artbook
6 CDs
3 memberships (Crunchyroll, ANN and TRSIs Got Anime)

I've been doing this for three years now, for comparison:
2010 $8068
2011 $8120
2012 $8895
a little higher this year, but I got back into figures and those tend to be costly.

I guess I'll do my 2012 totals since its now the first day of 2013.

I was looking to cut back to about $1500 and then leave myself an extra $200 for unexpected purchases for a maximum of $1700 this year. But I really wanted to avoid going over $1500. I was pretty good for about the first 7 months of the year. I cut back my manga purchases to 5 titles a year and no blind buys for manga or anime helped keep me in line. Then the Bandai situation made me move starting in August on some titles that I had been holding back on (Sword of the Stranger, Planetes, Code Geass, etc.). A few manga looked to be going out of print (Saikano) while there were some I had put off too long (Parasyte) and were on sale (Pluto, Nausicaa, etc.). A few pre-orders that I should probably have left for the new year (Lain, Hellsing Ultimate, etc.) didn't help. Luckily, I was able to reassert some discipline during the holiday sales and keep those purchases to a minimum. So let's see the tally then:

2012 Totals from Amazon: $580.73
2012 Totals from DeepDiscount: $35.41
2012 Totals from Ebay: $72.25
2012 Totals from RightStuf: $1095.01

2011 totals: $2283.80
2012 Totals for year: $1783.40

I would have liked to have been a little more in line with my original goal of $1500, but it wasn't a total bust. I think what ended up helping my overall budget was deciding not to buy any Aniplex titles this year. If I had bought most of the ones I wanted I would have exceeded last year's totals, so I guess there's a silver lining to Aniplex prices as it actually helped reduce my expenses this year. Laughing

Goals for 2013:
Reduce anime/manga purchases to $1300 with again a $200 allowance for unexpected or surprise purchases for a max of $1500. This budget will be tough, but I want to get more disciplined on my purchases and strive for only things I really want or that I find compelling.

Well, the year is over, and since I did a budget this year, lets see how I did.

Monthly Budget (rolling): $150
Yearly Budget: $1800
Yearly Expenses: $1764

Wow, I came in under budget. That's kind of amazing.
Monthly Extremes:
Largest Month: November ($346)
Smallest Month: (Tie) August and October ($0)
Most in the red: April (-$48)
Most in the black: October (+$256)
I spent August and October working overseas, which tends to put a crimp in buying things.

Manga Expenses: $318
Anime Expenses: $1383
I didn't budget Figure expenses, so I have no idea, but only bought 5 this year, so probably around $500

Since it worked remarkably well, I plan to keep the same system in place this year. I think I'll add a $600 yearly line for figures, so I can at least get a handle on those.

And now, the sum total of franchise expenditures, before I delete them all and start again: (some sum to 0 thanks to Amazon reward points)

Anime:
Akikan: $32
Madoka: $285
Sora no Otoshimono: $78
Sekirei: $25
Kampfer: $30
Hetalia: $65
A Channel: $32
Toradora: $70
Sailor Victory: $9
House of 5 Leaves: $45
Galaxy Angel: $10
Bantorra: $74
Occult Academy: $48
Mahoromatic: $19
Lupin III: $0
Enma-kun: $49
Nadesico: $37
Steins;Gate: $44
Ai Yori Yoshi: $0
Koihime Muso: $59
Hellsing: $49
Heaven's Memo Pad: $49
Bakemonogatari: $189
Zakuro: $45
Penguindrum: $48
Eden of the East: $31
Shana: $24

Manga:
Kimi ni Todoke: $72
Earl & Fairy: $29
Nura: $30
Pretty Face: $75
Red River: $70
Venus Versus Virus: $25
Yotsuba: $17

December
Anime: $120.36
Manga: $5.50
= $125.86

Year end total: $1229.70

And while that is a fraction of what some pay in a single month, it's probably the most this non-"collector" has ever spent in a year.
about a third of it was probably Bandai stock going rare.

Sigh. The day of reckoning.

December Grand Total: $1,015.52

Anime: $927.76 (36 TV, 11 OVA, 10 Movies)
Figures: $66.44 (1)
Artboxes: $5.05 (1)
Shipping: $15.49
Sales Tax: $0.78

Lost $9.20 due to currency difference

Total 2012 Spending:

Grand Total: $8,747.29

Anime: $6,554.11 (151 TV, 106 OVA, 63 movies)
Manga: $81.09 (12 vols + some manga comics)
Figures: $632.38 (13)
Books: $18.00 (1)
T-shirts: $21.37 (2)
J-Games: $74.18(3)
Movie ticket/passes: $228.82 (14 + 1 pass)
Artboxes: $29.59 (6)
Lunchboxes: $11.14 (2)
Subscription(s): $82.45 (3)
Anime Con: $92.12 (2)
Sales Tax: $336.09
Shipping: $368.92
Handling: $98.77

Lost $101.53 to currency difference

Well, that's an improvement over my 2011 Grand Total ($11,636.57) but not by as much as I was hoping. 10K a year is not a sustainable average for me. Let's see what 2013 brings!

Well, here we go.

December total: £139.87

Anime: £10.99
Manga/manhwa: £128.88

Year end total: £2304.90. That is definitely not sustainable on a student budget. I seriously need to cut back.

Quietest month was February, where I spent £70.47, and my busiest month was, unsurprisingly, the month I went to a con. That was June and I spent £489.76.

Fortunately, a lot of manga series I'm collecting are ending soon, and I've not really found too much to replace them, but you never know.

I expressed disappointment last year at having spent an all-time low of $973.79. Never before has my yearly total been less than $2000 . I average about three grand a year or at least I used too. I’d hoped that this year would be better. Did I reach that goal?

Well, at first glance, I was happy that I spent $1642.32 this year. That is still low, but it’s a definite improvement from last year. Right? Right? Not really. I checked last year’s numbers and I bought nearly the exact same amount of anime I bought last year. Obviously this just means that the shows I bought this year were more expensive that the ones I bought last year. In comparison, my most expensive purchase in 2011 was the $52 Arakawa Under The Bridge box set. This year, it was Madoka. I also bought Bakemonogatari and the Garden of Sinners. Hence, roughly 30% of that $1600 total goes to Aniplex. NISA also contributed a good amount. Of the eleven titles they released this year, I bought eight.

…this fact leads to some interesting (if not disturbing) stats. I bought more anime this year from NISA, a company that entered the anime scene less than five years ago, than any other. I like NISA (obviously), but this is probably not a good thing. I also like Nozomi/RightStuf, but if there ever comes a time I’m buying more anime from them than Funimation, we have a serious problem. This thought made me look at 2010’s numbers. I spent more than twice as much money in 2010 than this year and bought almost three times as much. However, upon a closer look, I realized that I did a lot ebaying for out-of print anime that year which inflated my numbers. I'm sad to realize it, but my days of splurging on anime are gone and the economy has little to do with it. Or maybe it does. The economy may not have an effect on me, but it has had an effect on what is being licensed.

Anyways, there’s a two-way tie between Funimation and Sentai for the second most titles bought. I can count on one hand the amount of anime I bought from Bandai and Viz…in three years. Unless a new and worthwhile anime company pops up, I expect this trend won’t change next year. I predict that this year I will buy more than I did in 2011 but less than I did in 2012. 2013 sure isn’t looking good!

Well, I just lost my exact figures since I was just punching values into a calculator, but as far as I can tell, my spending for 2012 came right up around $3000. That's...sustainable, I'm not breaking the bank to do it, but I can't really call it desirable either. It's the first full year I've had a real budget to work with, so it could fall off on its own since I now own most of what I really want to own from the last 15 years. Also I've added subscriptions to Funimation and The Anime Network, which combined with my CR subscription gives me access to most new shows for around $20/mo, so I can cut down some purchasing in that way as well.

So, about a month back, I said I was going to hold off on reporting my annual total for 2012 because I wanted to get a more detailed breakdown on what I all spent on. Well, I finally finished getting everything itemized, so now I can get a decent count. I already knew how much I spent on the year, I was just more curious as to how many items that entailed. My expenditures for 2012 go as follows:

Anime - $2,814.95 comprised of 78 sets of DVDs or BDs. Actual disc count isn't practical to get, so each set is probably between 1 and 6 discs.

Manga - $1,982.51 which bought me 223 manga. Again, some manga were omnibuses, so I'm getting more than one volume in those, but that's a good ballpark figure.

Figures - $6,602.98 This is what blew my budget to pieces. That's what 89 figures will set you back. Two dozen of them were Nendoroid Petites, so they're not all scaled figures. If they had been, that number would be closer to $9,000. Anyways, I'm going to have to be more choosy when it comes to figures this year.

Miscellaneous - $982.53 The miscellaneous section is comprised of a plushie, 3 wallscrolls, a doujin, 2 hug pillows, a concert ticket at Anime Expo, 10 light novels, a set of the mind controlled cat ears, my GotAnime membership, a ticket to the Maid Cafe at Anime Expo, 3 shirts, 6 visual novels, a pass for Anime Expo 2013, my ANN subscription, and a ticket to watch the Madoka Magica movies.

Total for 2012 - $12,382.97 And I wonder why I'm always broke. I'm really going to have to cut that down this year, although I won't actually set any goals or anything. I'm just hoping I'll spend less.
