Naw, if you are running up credit card debt or spending the rent money on anime, some additional restraint is in order. However, if this is discretionary income all that spending less means is that you get less good stuff. Just because you have to live on cup noodles doesn't mean you should get less anime. Cool

@Alan45
Smile
I usually don't spend it unless I have it. Its more about breaking self-imposed rules and a shift in perspective about my wants. Plus have you seen the sodium count in those cup noodles? Its a killer. Wink

Wow, I've needed something like this for a while. I just started keeping track of my spending month to month, and by title. I need to cut down a lot after the next 6 months though, as I recently lost my job and am working with much less discretionary income right now through my new one.

All in all, I've been averaging a pretty staggering $700 per month, or so, since June 2015, which I attribute to catching up with a LOT of older import Blu-rays, but each of the upcoming months through May are still in that ballpark with just pre-orders for figures and Blu-rays, and now that Gundam Origin III is coming in May, my monthly total for that has exceeded $1000. I'd like to get my average back under $500, just for the sake of my comfort with the new job situation. I'll probably cut back to mostly just Limited items for a few months, and maybe cut back on the figures as well. Those figures take up a lot of space! Shocked

Buying anime has become such an occasional thing for me that I forgot close out my 2015 expenses until I went to add Evangelion 3.33 to my spreadsheet just now.

2015 was a much better year, meaning my expenses dropped significantly. I spent $580.53 for the year, compared to $1,679.24 in 2014.

My net for 2015 is lower, because I've been selling off a good chunk of my collection. I should track that, too, but I have not been. Maybe I can catch up on that.

Legal streaming is a gift to my budget. And anime is no longer a collectible for me. I have so many titles that I've tried to revisit and have no interest in watching again, which is why I've started to sell them. Right now, I'm making it a point to only collect the Monogatari series and whatever Ghibli titles have yet to hit blu-ray. If the Evangelion series blu-ray is picked up this year, or the Escaflowne BDs are released, those would be on my list, too.

Here's to spending less in 2016.

I finally got up a spread sheet of this year's purchases, but it is arranged by type of item not by month. I figure I'll wait another couple of weeks and just list the totals for the year.

@Blood-

That happened to me. I was looking for the first Kiddy Grade single. I wanted it cheap since I really didn't need it. I found one for under $4, shipping included on eBay. The guy never did charge my account. The case was messed up but the disk played fine.

Ah, so it does occasionally happen. Wow, that would be sweet. I suspect the charge will eventually show up, but it is kind of odd it hasn't yet. I made the purchase back in November and I've received the item.

Well, this is everything that I bought this year, or have currently pre-ordered through the end of this year. It's been quite a year for me, and I'm definitely looking to downsize a bit through 2017 for a lot of reasons, but this was fun, and there were quite a few pretty insane months there. So far, I'm looking to average less than $300 per month for 2017. That way I can put that extra money toward paying down my mortgage. Need to be a bit more responsible, honestly.

@ relyat08 - good luck sticking to your budget next year. And because this is the Internet and tone is sometimes difficult to interpret, I hasten to add that I mean that sincerely, not sarcastically.

Welp, my cc paper statement arrived yesterday and it does include the charge for Don't Leave Me Alone, Daisy. Dang. So weird that when I checked online yesterday there was no mention of it

I credit this thread with helping me reduce my spending Smile. Before 2011 I had no budget for anime and manga and was bleeding money out of my pores. Laughing

Its a little early, but since I don't plan on buying anything else here at the close of the year I will post this year's total:

Total for purchases in 2011: $2283.80
Total for purchases in 2012: $1783.40
Total for purchases in 2013: $1106.58
Total for purchases in 2014: $762.41
Total for purchases in 2015: $1437.33
Total for purchases in 2016: $879.68

This year I came in under budget (Yay!). It was tough there were a few things on RightStuf's xmas sale that almost made me splurge at the end of the year. Then I recalled my righteous fury towards certain companies and was able to extinguish my spendthrift flame. Next year will be tricky since I'm eyeing some imports and may have to increase my budget...or maybe not. Thank goodness I'm not a figure collector. Wink Very Happy

Glad this thread was able to help you get spending under control, One-Eye. I'm surprised the industry hasn't tried to wipe it out... Coincidentally, 2011 was the year I first started keeping an itemized record of every relevant purchase. Sadly, doing so didn't help me get a grip on spending until about 2013.

I got the final comic shop delivery today and I only have one thing on pre-order which couldn't arrive this year even if TRSI shipped tomorrow. So I was able to do the year end totals a bit early.

Manga: 382 volumes for $3610.11
Novels: 44 for $592.79
Manhwa: 3 volumes for $25.17 (Chiro the Star Project)
Bluray: 62 sets for $3102.36
DVD: 14 sets for $352.60
Subscriptions: 4 for $181.90 (ANN, Crunchyroll, TRSI Got Anime and Otaku USA magazine.) I did not renew my subscription for Funimation as dubs are not a priority.
Kickstarters: 3 for $417. (Riding Bean Bluray, Skip Beat Bluray and the KOR manga.)
I got one Art(??) Book, Monster Girl Encyclopedia for $17.49
One CD set of themes from the Monogatari series for $39.98.

Grand Total: $9371.58

For reference here are the yearly totals since I started keeping track:

2010 $8068
2011 $8120
2012 $8896
2013 $7380
2014 $9482
2015 $8160

Pretty much a normal year for me. DVDs are way down, Kickstarters is a new category.
