Okay, here is what I understood from the ending of the episode "Stand Alone Complex" from GITS: SAC.

spoiler[The Major discovered that Aoi, whom we thought was the Laughing Man, was merely a copycat himself. Section 9 was re-formed. As Serrano was about to testify in the trial his car was wired (I assume) to explode.]

Now, here's what I don't get. Who was the guy walking down the corridor at the end? My guess is that he was spoiler[the ORIGINAL Laughing Man that Aoi intercepted the email from initially.] Will we be told for sure who he is during GITS: SAC 2nd Gig?

I'd say that what you said is a pretty good guess. I think that spoiler[Cerano getting killed] will spur Aoi to eventually join section 9. My friends and I have been hoping that this was going to happen since we first found out who the real laughing man was. The second gig should be interesting! Anime catgrin

That was an awesome episode. GitS:SAC moved up a rank in my Top 10 list (#2). I was hoping Aoi would join them right away, although I knew he wouldn't for some reason. If you think he may eventually join, then that will make me happy.

I don't think he'll neccessarily join, because he doesn't seem to be the type who has the personality to wait for and carry out orders, but I suspect he'll be an important recurring guest star who will help out alot unofficially A character like that is always a good one to have around. I thought the restructuring of the group as a different but equally tight unit was a great way to end the first season.

On a side note, as SAC ends and we begin the wait for 2nd GIG, I'll note that I didn't think much of the series at first. The Major's skimpy getup turned me off, and I almost gave up after the episode that dealt with porn, thinking that the series wasn't really for me. But it really became intriguing and I'm glad I didn't give up and kept watching. I'll be there next season.

I have a question...through this whole series the Catcher in the Rye has been constantly brought up. At the end, before the chief shows up, Aoi and the Maj. were talking about J.D. Salinger...

What did Aoi say about why some one would isolate themselves and never write any books ever again?

And...what was Aoi trying to acomplish...I mean, was he trying to get the point across that an Artifical mind and data can be easily destroyed and erased forever, so we should try to save books? Thats what I got from the last episode.

eerr... my take is that AOI was actually quoting someone *don't know who*

but the gist of it is that some AUTHORS are recognized by the fact that they RARELY do put out books

anyway, AOI basically took it upon himself to tell the world of the injustice... that wasn't the original INTENTION *he is actually copying someone else when you think about it, but changed the original intention*

in fact, he only learned of the whole micro machine thing from a BLACK MAIL letter directed to... Serano I think *which is the ORIGINAL intention*

I think that the point that he was trying to get through is that, even without the original present, it will spawn endless copies because of our social system

he was witness to this personally in the assasination attempt earlier in the series

but yeah, your sort of onto something about data...

HARDBOUND data anyway is somewhat invaluable in a sense that it cannot be manipulated as easily *apparently, data never really just disappears... it's more of, it can be altered and is then considered "stolen*

the MURAI vaccine recipient list is proof of this anyway

well, that's all I've got right now I guess... wow, I registered here to talk about GITS, but it's fun

Well, this is just my interpretation, so it could be off. I think what Aoi was saying was that part of what makes Salinger's work so valuable is that he didn't produce that much writing for public consumption. Aoi was trying to say (I think) that spoiler[he would rather be remembered for helping to expose the conspiracy surrounding the cure for cyberbrain sclerosis, as opposed to going on a crusade against other crimes and having his name get watered down.]

I guess ill have to take a stab at this, however i will admit that ill have to watch the ep again before i get a good idea of what was going on. A mix of big words didn't really help my understanding of the show.

I thought that in saying "an author can't write too many books" or whatever it was he said, Aoi was referring back to the copy cat phenomenon. Basically saying that, if an author creates too many novels that he/she risks doing one of two things. One, he/she might captivate their audience to the point where no one would even attempt to copy his/her work. On the other hand the exact opposite could happen and the author's future works might leave much to the imagination and alienate the masses. In either case, If Aoi -being likened to an author in this situation- were to assume to Laughing Man role for too long, the copy-cat phenomenon probably wouldnt have occured.

Aoi's preference for literature serves two purposes in his life. The first is that it provides him with a sense of securtiy . As a hacker, he's fully aware of the faulty nature of electronic information. With books though, the information is harder to fabricate and much more trustworthy. For him, the books are a non-phony world similar to the one that Holden Caulfield(sp?) searched for. Also, the books give him a sense of individuality. They make him human. Just like with the major and her use of the watch to define her own individuality, Aoi too, has to use an object to define his own self because once again, the extensive use of cybernetics in his body has hindered his ability to think of himself as being human(Think of the problem surrounding the Tachkomas becoming too human)

Think he might be refering to Jungle Cruise. spoiler[The one with the guy who does a little light Bondage/SM before going Guro on his victims.]

Then again, there were a few little hints at Porn here and there. spoiler[Batou's comment "Score" in ep. 25 where he finds the secret stash of arms underneath the Major's Underwear Drawer at the first safehouse and then the buttcrack shot of the Major later on; Togusa looking at what appears to be the first steps in some "Private Shots" when he reviews the pics from the slain officer; and in another episode, before the team busts a Chinese gang, one of them is looking over a shot of some girl in distress on a cell phone (I thought the guy was a White Slaver when I first saw that episode, then I realized he was an Arms Dealer).]

As for the major's Full White Swimsuit Clothing and leather Jacket, i'm kinda stumped at the tactical advantage of that getup.....

The only thing I can think about her get up was that it allowed her to move about more freely. When she used the stealth-camo in the movie she would get kind of skimpy too. Of course i'm probably just thinking about this too hard. It's probably just some fan-service or something Laughing .

He was probably refering to the one episode spoiler[that had some yakuza head sitting infront of 2 flat pannel monitors while being talked to by a person I cant remember, with some sexual moaning and other noises happening, AS did edit out the visuals in the reflection off his glasses but it was originally there.] then again the others did mention a few more possibilities.

spoiler[Actually, she went full nude, save for a gun belt on her thigh. Of course, since she had a cyborg body, they did manage to bypass the Japanese censorship laws.....]

spoiler[ know, I'm pretty sure she had this thin layer of camo on... but it was very very thin... anyway, In Oshii's GITS, camo is apparently more useful when your pretty much naked... but then in Kamiyama's GITS, the major is able to use it even with tactical gear on... you know, they never really explained the dynamics of the therm-optic wear... it's pretty interesting when think about it ]

Well, I think the main rationale for her outfit is that Masamune Shiro likes his fanservice.

Aside from that, she's a cyborg, and probably lacks any real body shame, since it sort of isn't even her body. Also, she never gets cold, so that's not a factor, and her body is VERY tough, so it's not like a layer of kevlar's really going to do much for her. So that being the case, having an outfit that interferes with her movement the absolute least amount possible is a pretty good idea. She doesn't need added thermal or physical protection (the reason us meatbags wore clothes prior to shame), so why put up with the unnecessary chafing?
