Brain Diving - Howling Mad Mardock

I've gotten through the first ninety pages or so and I agree about the deftness when addressing character. Initially I found Balot fairly irritating, in some part because I find the dish she's named after fairly squicky, but as she "broke out of her shell" she's become one of my favorite heroines in a while. It's a bit disappointing to hear that by the end the potential is sort of wasted.

Thanks for linking Toxine, that was an awesome story. I really need to get back into reading more actual books/stories, recently all I have been buying in that regard are the Twelve Kingdoms books as they are released.

Interesting that "Toxine" should be mentioned. It's description immediately reminded me of the "Android and I" episode of GITS: SAC.

I became interested in Mardock Scramble when I saw a trailer for the first movie of the trilogy. The visual style of the animation and dark tone of the music drew me in immediately and told me this was one title to keep an eye on. I ordered the book a week ago and I'm quite looking forward to reading the story behind Rune Balot, despite learning that the book may not have been as good as it could have been. I'm eager to see "The First Compression" and to see how it compares to the novel. I haven't heard the status of the remaining two movies, but hopefully all three parts are completed. I didn't know the manga was being released in English, so that might be something to look forward too, as well.

Interesting read.
I should buy this novel, though I am a bit sad that it won't be the cyberpunk neon-noir I was expecting but will still read the novel, since I haven't read a novel in a long time.

Finally finished this paper beast. Potentially interesting concept ruined by extraneous material. Plus, Shell's whole motive is hard to take seriously. I guess, compared to Kite, Mardock at least justifies some of its sleazier elements for the sake of the story; but these plot points still feel tacked on most of the time. And yeah, it is ridiculous that the guy kept something so valuable in such an obvious place without even considering the possibility that someone would win, or that his own employees would/could blackmail him or rip him off. The action and the moments of introspection and commentary from the doc, to me, are the only real pay-offs. 'Cus everything else is padded out for the sake of emphasizing the same damn points we already know by now. I feel sorry for the people working on the next two films. 'Cus they're going to have to condense all the repetitive moments into something more palatable for people who want action, but who are forced to sit through longer versions of the equivalent of those Summer Wars card games-simply because that material comprises the bulk of the latter two books.
