Im grateful for this and all, but just what the hell has been happening for the streaming rights for this show??

First we get news that their will be no streams, and now we have two different companies streaming it at the same time? Whats goin on with this show?

The show is just that damn popular, pretty much the whole crunchyroll community was begging for it to be streamed

I'm thinking one of two things

1. Someone forgot the the first rule of licencing "they lie to your face until they make the press release."

2. The Japanese company is bi-polar

Yikes. So FUNimation's stream is for Elite Subscribers only while Crunchyroll's users get it free a week later. Sure, it adds two more territories, but still...

lol What is going on?

WOW!

This season is turning out to have some impressive surprises quite the contrary to pattern analysis!

First it was the TBS titles showing up on CR.
Now it's a shared simulcast with FUNi!

Color me impressed.

I don't get it. Both Funi and Crunchyroll are streaming it. Crunchyroll is streaming it like any other series (one week wait for non-subscribers), but is Funi just subscribers only? This makes no sense whatsoever.

Ok... wait, Im confused.

Funi is streaming the first ep to subscribers.... what's the draw to subscribe if people can watch it for free on Crunchy? HD? Or will it be like Crunchy and SD will come in the next week?

I mean, I'll probably watch it on Crunchyroll since I'm subscribed, but the more people it reaches the better. It's a pretty strange move for for a simulcast though.

Funimation hasn't announced their scheduling details yet, I'm sure it will probably follow the same schedule as crunchyroll. Paid subscribers first, than everyone a week later.

As for what happened behind the scenes, who knows. I have a guess that the Japanese companies weren't completely withholding the rights, just making some rather specific demands that ultimately resulted in this situation.

Pure random guessing to follow:

Crunchyroll: We want to stream Attack on Titan.
MBS: Sorry, we're not just giving those rights out.
Funimation: We want to stream Attack on Titan.
MBS: Sorry, we're not just giving those rights out.
Funimation: How about a full license? DVDs, everything?
MBS: Hmm, ok, that would be ok.
Funimation: And if we have that, might as well stream it as well... right?
MBS: Sure. But not you. Or not just you.
Funimation: Huh?
MBS: Your streaming sucks, Crunchyroll has a bigger marketshare in streaming. We want it streaming there. You can stream it too, though.
Funimation: Didn't you turn them down for streaming?
MBS: Yes, because that would be just streaming, and we can't have that. Oh, did we mention your DVD rights are contingent on getting the Crunchyroll stream?
Funimation: Ok... Hey, Crunchyroll, I know we normally compete, but how would you like to work together to stream Attack on Titan.
Crunchyroll: We'd love it!
MBS: Make sure all these contracts are signed in triplicate before you make any announcements!

The above was just something I made up off the top of my head (and we don't even know for sure Funimation has the dvd rights yet), but with how picky Japanese licensees can be at times, it wouldn't surprise me if the truth was something like that.

Hmmm...maybe CR will do a FATE ZERO and stream one week behind? that will give FUNI users advantage in terms of legal streaming... And If funimation cannot get the DVD/BLU RAY rights then it would make no sense to stream it IMO... The show is so popular, it would be a win win for everyone..... IT ALREADY HAS 630K VIEWS IN YOUTUBE FOR THE OPENING SEQUENCE....630K in just 1 WEEK!... That's beyond SAO popularity

I can even picture the limited edtion season 1 box set Shocked

Mad_Scientist's conversation sounds ridiculous though strangely plausible...

Anyway, I was considering subscribing to Funimation with this and Red Data Girl as exclusives, but I suppose RDG can wait.

And yet it's still not streaming in Australia. Well, I'm perfectly fine with fansubs for this one
