Good one! Very Happy

Actually, reading the opinions here has made me change my thoughts about the manga. I think I was approaching it from the wrong perspective after Comic Party and Maniac Road. I look forward to the next volume. I also just finished reading volume 1 of Pretty Maniacs and there's a funny scene in there where a girl who's goes to her first summer comic convention, who accidentally gets in line for a cute bunny eared heroine book called "Maple Syrup". Not knowing her way around, when she gets to the front she feels pressured to buy the book, spending money she didn't want to use. When she opens the book up of course it' s a porn comic and blood shoots out of her nose as she faints and the next panel shows her being carried away on a stretcher Razz

Comic Party is fine.

It's just...

Comic Party is basically a sports manga.

Guy gets roped into a sport/activity that he doesn't want to get into at first spoiler[i.e. Kazuki and doujinshi] which he turns out to have an ability for it... And before he knows it, he not only wants to continue, but also to become "the best" etc.

Whereas Genshiken is more about the inherent comedy of geeks, and how funny normal people are too.

In a way... Genshiken struck home for me that anime fans are actually very similar in many places.

i like this book too. i loved the first volume and i like the second one a bit less but the series as a whole works for me.

i don't know if this is a problem— but i don't lust for this book to come out like other books though. it's like i'm patient and when it comes out, i'll buy it immediately but i'm not itching for it. I suppose since the book has no real cliff hangers and is a slice of life rather than a action book. anyway, the next volume will be out oct... so yeah!

I thought the anime version of Comic Party was more realistic and more like Genshiken. The manga version of Comic Party was completely fantasy, what with having terrorists invading the comic market. And geez, what was the deal with Mizuki in the manga version, walking around with a baseball bat imbedded with nails and bashing people's skulls in!!??? Now THAT was over the top. But the anime cut all that type of stuff out. I think that almost all manga and anime share your sports manga theme: namely, a character thrown into a situation where their skills are not up to par and the rest of the story is them overcoming that lack of skill. This goes from making a manga to piloting a mecha to working up the nerve of telling a classmate you love them. I bet that almost every manga has that element. Kinda like Rocky, they train and discipline themselves over the course of the storyline.

i read the comic party manga and anime. although the concept for the series was original — neither the manga or anime was well done. both had lackluster characters, plot and presentation as a whole. having said that.. i would rate it a C+.

Genshiken is soooo much more high quality in all areas. i have not seen the Genshiken anime yet though.

The genshiken anime is a must, especially the japanese voice for mandarake. It's so obnoxious that it's hilarious. I thought the genshiken anime was done better than the manga.

The comic party anime is pretty average, I would give it a C+ too and I agree it's more shonen-ish than anything.

I can only speak about the manga because I haven't seen the anime.

More than that...

Sports manga are, to me, different because the character has a natural skill that is useful for the sport in question, but doesn't want to take part. But once they take part, they realise that they have this skill, and that it is actually useful.

It's one of the things that separates Sports Manga from other kinds of Aspirational manga.

yeah, i agree. sports manga is a category unto itself. which i love. also, there is variety within them too.

Whistle — is like the prototypical inspirational manga. sucky, small boy trains hard with guidance blossoms.

Eyeshield 21 — Like Whistle but taken up a notch and focuses less on reality and more on comedy and fantasy. It's made to be entertaining as hell.

Prince of Tennis — The kid is already good looking, talented and better than the team captain. This manga is different in that it's less inspirtational as in rooting for the "under-dog" but you're rooting for the "hero" to accomplish his task.

Hikaru No Go, and some others continue that trend of variety in "sports-related" manga.

I can't really speak on Comic Party the anime; but I felt that the manga was a bit unrealistic...

But then again, none of us are Doujin artists, so it's difficult to know what is realistic and what isn't within those circles.

Moreover, the characters and situations in Genshiken feel more natural and realistic to me because there are easily elements that I see in myself and friends who are fans, such as convention attending, or simply talking about the differences between manga versions and anime versions... I know that these things are things that happen to anime fans, because I am an anime fan.

Of course, I didn't realise how deep I was in until I tried to talk to mundanes again... It's not easy!

I've never read a sports manga. I see them all the time and contemplated purchasing one but I never have. Which do you think would be a good one to start with? I always hear good things about Prince and Hikaru LOOKED interesting. I've seen all 4 of the titles you mentioned.

About the only "sports" sports titles I've tried are Eyeshield 21 and Ultimate Muscle (Kinnikuman Nisei.)

I've enjoyed both... But partly because I have tried both Football (American) and Wrestling.

i would say the most straight forward and interesting right off the bat is Prince of Tennis. this manga has millions of fans in the US and Japan and they're making a live action movie out of it.

i suggest you read it at the bookstore or find a way to preview it to make sure it's up your alley.

[i read all my sports manga at the store during my lunch break. as of late, i have been wanting to collect some of the sports manga. surprisingly, it's eyeshield 21 that i think about the most)

Well, I got the first volume of Prince today, so I'll see if I like it. Eyeshield also looked appealing, but I've heard so many great things about Prince of Tennis over the years that I wanted to see if it was any good. This will be the first sports manga I've read. Sorry for getting off the Genshiken topic!
