You know, even this episode was the one that really made me get more interested into the series (not because of the weird serial killer, because of the drama and emotions emitted from it) I truly was surprised that Adult Swim had shown it. I guess YTV didn't feel like hearing any parents (etc...) complain?

It's been quite awhile since I watched this episode, but to my recollection, there is very little objectionable content in there. In any case, GITS:SAC is not intended for young kids in the first place. It's certainly PG13, at least. But I certainly remember liking the episode, as it shed light on Batou's past and his personality.

It was a good Batou episode, but the disturbing content was only there in idea, not in presentation, the animation style in few ways communicated that the victims were "skinned," they simply were covered in dark hues of red, the only truly objectionable content beyond that was that he made the victims watch from his eyes while the deed was done...
In it's own ways, though, the episode was very political in its discussion of warcrimes, so I suppose that could have been the straw that broke the camel's back on this one...

You're making my day MUCH better. Rolling EyesRazz

Being a Canadian, I was somewhat outraged that it didn't air. While I had my hopes high for YTV (the last 4 eps were aired uncut, late timeslot & it's own disclaimer), even those were not enough. It really shows that YTV can't really handle older teen/adult titles properly at the moment, and why the heck did they even get it in the first place (considering that their target audience is 2-17).

In the end, it's all Teletoon's fault. Just kidding. Razz

"Jungle Cruise" wasn't terribly graphic visually, but aurally had moments to make your skin crawl, what with the recording of the victims screaming. The show presented enough that your imagination would fill in the blanks, and the idea of skinning your victims alive is, bluntly, disturbing as hell. Cudos to YTV for making the call to skip the broadcast of that episode. Buy the dvd if you want to see everything unedited anyway; this IS television afterall, and decisions like this are nothing new.

But YTV doesn't have any guidelines stating what they can and can't show. This censorship is entirely self-imposed and pointless. They've never had any problem with their post-midnight content before, and Cartoon Network hasn't had any problem with airing the episode at all. If someone can't handle stuff like this, they shouldn't be watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Likewise, if YTV can't handle it, they shouldn't be airing the show at all.

Not to mention that the second season, where content like this is much more common, will be getting a TV-MA in the States. If this incident is any indication, it's going to be unairable on YTV.

Licensing this series was a very unwise decision on YTV's part, especially since they're technically not even allowed to target programming towards the series' intended 18+ audience.

The squishing sounds and the screams as the woman is watching herself getting skinned alive is reason enough for it to be cut. As a fan I'm disappointed of course but I can understand that YTV doesn't need the trouble.

It was a very good Batuo episode. The episode while not to graphic you could say, I agree, it did make your skin crawl.

To bad YTV failed to have some gonads, I though Canadian TV could air stuff like this.
Oh well. Looks like [as] wins this round.

I'm watching it right now on Cartoon Network. A great episode. Too bad YTV will never air it. Like a great teacher once said "STBY". Sucks To Be You

I believe YTV censored this episode because, while they thought it to be too graphic, they also have to follow CRTC guidelines about what can and can't be shown on television.

The CRTC, unlike the FCC is very strict on what broadcasters up here must do...

They were keeping their own butts clean

Ghost in the Shell shouldn't be aired on YTV in first place, It should be on Teletoon they have the rights to show adult content.

No, the CRTC does nothing to regulate content. They're nothing like the FCC. Their "strictness" on what can or can't be shown on television is limited mostly to the Canadian content issue and is nothing like ridiculous content regulations that the FCC tries to impose. The rule is that as long as the show is aired with appropriate disclaimers, their butts are effectively covered.

What trouble? YTV has never run into trouble for post midnight programming before, and CN, who has been a target for complaints MUCH more often, still hasn't run into any trouble.

Oh, it can. YTV can, and any other station (even the W Network) would, but like you said, YTV just doesn't have any gonads.
