I personally dislike going for gambles (and extra hassle), so I just bought the BD/DVD player online with the restrictions already removed. I think I spent about $100.
I found some websites that have codes to make players region-free, but those are mostly for older models. There's still the update here and there, but it's not as prevalent anymore. I've gone into Walmart before, written down the models, and then searched online for work-arounds but my searching was fruitless.
Yeah, the VLC workaround doesn't work on my newer 3 y.o. laptop. It does for my older one, but that guy is 7 years old by this point.

My guy is almost 7 years old, too, but it doesn't seem to matter.
After thinking about it more, I'm pretty sure I'll just buy an all-region player rather than create one but I can't seem to find one for less than $180 CAD on Amazon.ca.

Blood, make sure the one you buy allows updates. So many bluray need the latest software to play (just bought 3 new blus and all 3 required a different update). Many region free players cannot be updated or it will override the region free hack. The updatable ones seem to go for a little more money. I just picked up a Sony for $250 USD and could not be happier.

Thanks for the tip, geishageek, I'll keep that in mind. Of course, my other, cheaper option is just to buy an all-region DVD player as opposed to Blu-ray. I currently don't own any non-R1 BDs but I may in the future. However, for right now I could easily get away with DVD only and they are definitely cheaper machines (duh).

Went to Waterstones and got Honey Blood 0, Spell of Desire 3, My Little Monster 7, Devils and Realist 4 and Black Rose Alice 3.
I sense a business opportunity here. I buy Blood- a region B BluRay player; he buys me a region A one and we post them to each other...

Not a bad idea, st_owly, but I needs me an all-region machine so that I can play all those sweet, sweet anime releases from Botswana...

@st_owly
That is how Bluray players are coded?? I can see no logic to those distinctions at all.
At any rate, received from the comic shop today:
Figure:
Girls Und Panzer Hana Isuzu Figma
Manga:
Master Keaton volume 2
Oh My Goddess volume 47
My Little Monster volume 7.

Nope, neither do I. It's not like DVD region codes are much better though.

Claymore volume 26 finally shipped.
@Blood-: I'd offer to point you to the program that plays mine excellently but I've got Windows machines, and there isn't a Mac version.

@ Kruszer - I'll probably be buying a PC laptop later on this year (my Mac is my work-provided machine that I take home each night), so I'd love to hear about this program. Feel free to PM if you like. Thanks!

My pre-orders for Saiyuki and Hayate the Combat Butler's third season from Rightstuf appear to be getting ready to ship out soon. Been charged for both sets.
