Does anyone know if this affect the American licenses of the manga?

Since this involves the negotiations between the American publisher and the Japanese publisher, the bankruptcty would invalidate the license to the American license and the US Publisher would have to become part of the case against the Japanese publisher because of payment they may have paid toward that Japanese publisher.

It depends entirely on how the contracts are worded, and who owns the intelectual property.

But I've heard (not verified yet) that one German publisher has stated that they will not be able to release any more of their ongoing Biblos titles until this is cleared up.

Another completely unverified item is this mailing list post, supposedly by Yamane Ayano.

Regarding Biblos: Yamane Ayano
Hello, it's Yamane
Sorry for being so late with replying recently...
Once things have calmed down, I will reply in order.
I'm sure it is quite the rumor now and some of you may already know but
I will borrow this blog to give you this message.

Biblos has gone bankrupt.
Sorry...this is where the business lingo starts coming in so I'm just going to summarize:
Basically, the president of Biblos also has a connecting business with an IT company which has gone under and he is being affected greatly by it as well. This has been gradually getting worse since last fall, and basically Biblos has been taking the windfall and now both companies are in ruins. Right now, the editors are all out trying to tie up looses ends and what now, but this month's "Magapi", "Gold" etc; have all been put on hold. Regarding the series which are currently running, the Biblos editors are out finding companies to pick up the titles so in regards to the continuation of series, these are also on hold indefinitely.

There is no news yet of when things will begin again so I cannot say anything is for sure but, I think that it will be abou 2-3 months before things have settled down and the magazines can continue.
I apologize for putting a hold on this series again.
In regards to the comics (tankoubon), they will most likely be release through the new company from this point on.

This part gets into what I believe is for those who have subscriptions that are pre-paid, and she basically says that they are doing all they can to arrange refunds for everyone. Basically Biblos has shut down as of 6:00 and so she is saying she will continue to correspond with editors to keep the new up.

Here, she basically says a farewell message to the publishing company and thanks them for everything and is regretful that things ended this way. She, herself, only heard the news yesterday and feels quite dazed still about the whole situation. She hopes to snap out of it quickly and do her best to bring the best of her work very soon.

For now...until I bring more news...

Perhaps if one of our staff has some free time, we can post a more accurate translation, but regardless, the source is unverifiable at this time, so I can't post any of it as news, and obviously I can't promise you that it's real. Although personally I believe that it is.

Yamane Ayano isn't the editor-in-cheif at BeXBoy, she's a mangaka who publishes several works under the label.

Oops Embarassed

Thanks.

Here's some more rumour, supposedly Biblos was completely in the black, but it's bankruptcy is related to the recent bankruptcy of another company.

I've heard this as being an IT company, and the publisher Hekitensha. Hekitensha seems to be the more solid item since that facts do check out.

Quote:
Hekitensha, a publishing company, went bankrupt in March 31.
Since the representative director of Hekitensha
is the person who serves the post of representative director
of Biblos, too, there was a rumour that also Biblos might go bankrupt.
And it has happened.
It is said that Hekitensha's having been operating in the red
hurt the operation of Biblos and Biblos is liable for approximately
two milliard yen.

Also Hiland, a BL publisher which invested in Hekitensha,
has filed for bankruptcy.

"Milliard," btw, is synonymous with "billion." So about US$20 million.

It's possible the creators would just get their manga published elsewhere like what happened with Gutsoon.

Holy, I just read the title and I thought 'Tokyopop?!' but then I actually bothered to finish reading the article. Not that this is much better news though.

The item from Yamane Ayano was published on her BBS under her name. The first post is her message.

Depsnds again on the contract. Sometimes Manga-ka can change publishers freely, othertimes there are some restrictions, such as a trademarked name (Trigun -> Trigun Maximum for example), other times the contract may stipulate that the publisher has exclusive ownership of everything related to the title (a contract you'd expect a first time manga-ka to have). In the last case, the contract may disolve upon the bankruptcy of the publisher, or it may go to whoever purchases the company's assets, depending on the exact wording of the clauses.

If they fail to sell the popular anthology mags and their imprint, their editors will likely move on, taking their manga-ka with them. Many artists will go where their editors go.

*skims Japanese translation* At first I was worried, because I used to own the Japanese volumes of FAKE and lost them.. and I want to rebuy them, and I was afraid it'd be impossible now if the publisher was bankrupt. But it sounds like the new company that takes over each series will still publish them, so that's good. Biblos had some good titles!

It seems to me that the more established writers will probably find homes with other companies such as Bamboo, Asuka, etc. It will cull out those that are not as popular. I'm wondering about the magazines. Those maybe harder to find homes for. When I hear that as many as 90 titles are published in a month, it is not a wonder that there would be a bust. Sounds like the market needed to come down. Boom and bust, simular things are happening with the manga here.

JPN translation seems accurate.

This is some crazy news. I remember tittering over that b-boy phonebook magazine Biblos publishes back in high school. Good times.

I'll second that" Yay". I was positive that someone would step in, too much being published by Biblos to let it just disappear.
