Because they wanted to stay in business. The 'Acquire Nothing and Make Jokes About It' plan had a few supporters (I'm looking at you Steve Foster), but it conservatives won out again and made them license new stuff.
Or maybe you were looking for, "so they could please their lord and master, Satan." |

| Well, you know, they need to license new shows to make a profit and finance their other "completely sure to make money eventually" endeavors, like the live-action Evangelion movie... and the Anime Network... and the Popsicle-stick skyscraper... and the fifty-foot magnifying glass... and the escalator to nowhere.... |

| The ADV website says they have lisenced the Azumanga series, could someone clear this up for me? |

I'm not quite sure what there is to clear up. They announced the license at Anime Boston. |
