Eesh! The Borders where I lived always seemed to do so well. They had great coupon deals, especially their buy-2-get-1-manga-free deal... it was always a great excuse to pick up new manga.

But then the Waldenbooks disappeared from the malls... and then the other Borders in town started closing... and now with these disastrous financial losses, not to mention company leaders jumping ship left and right, I wonder if they'll get back on their feet at all. To make matters worse, book sales in the US have taken a huge nosedive in recent years, people just aren't buying books. Not to mention, approximately 1/3 of the nation is functionally illiterate, with the numbers growing by almost 2 million every year, which is never a good thing for a society. Sad

I wonder how Half Price books is fairing in all this? Could this be a sign of the end of large brick-n-mortar bookstores? Dunno, but I sure hope not! Confused

We never had a Borders in our area. The closest I could find was two hours drive away. We did have a Walden Books, but Borders closed it. The manager said it was profitable, but Borders just didn't want to deal with the smaller stores.

After they closed, I kept getting E-mails asking why I wasn't using by Borders card anymore. I told them and the response was to shop online. I pointed out that online there were better deals elsewhere. No response to that.

I was sad to see the Borders near where I live shut down. I spent a lot of time there browsing and purchasing books, including quite a bit of manga. It was right next to the movie theater, too, which meant that I would browse books before and/or after heading in to see a movie.

Down the road there's a Barnes and Noble, but their manga selection isn't as great as it used to be.
