I don't think that Antoinette is being biased. She is just stating a general populaton position that the anime fans have ignored or are clueless of until a controversy erupts.

In fact, the next time that you guys go to a con (at 4 or more star hotels in some cases) you should think about this when you see or hear about stuff like:

Rei in a towel.
Girls begging for money to buy Pocki.
People making out or masturbating in the video room at night.
People collapsed in the hotel corridors.
Yaoi fangirls asking guys to pose in various positions for a picture.

And think, "How does this portray anime fandom to the general population?"

This guy goes to court tommarow. He'll get sentenced, he'll loose his license, and it'll be the end of the story. I think we're blowing this out of proportion though, mainly because one news site mentioned anime. One can hope that we don't hear anymore about this, like the Peach Girl incident after the guy gets processed. I have trouble defending the guy, as he knowingly showed kids the pictures, had sixty five pictures in his backpack, and even hid them in books with graph paper.

So as a anime fan, yeh, this guy is a wacko. Sadly it seems that hentai can attract that wrong sort of people to the world of anime. I don't see how the guy having hentai is a referandum on anime. I mean if the guy had real porn, would it be a referandum on the movie industy? We can only hope that this guy had the normal hentai stuff that we all see on cheap websites. I don't think they would arrest the guy for having normal anime. They mention that it was sexually explicit, so I'm believing the cops more then the guy.

Any way, hopefully we don't see or hear anymore about this after tommarow.

I think you are also biased. Yes, there is loli and shota and hentai and what-not, but judging by what you are saying, you think all anime is either kiddy-stuff like the dubs they show on TV or porn. Watch Cowboy Bebop and Monster. Those are mature animated shows from Japan that aren't porn. In fact, Monster doesn't even have any sex appeal-it sells based on the fact that it is really well-written, smart, and emotional.

Actually, my favorite anime include Galaxy Express (pretty much all of the off shoots as well) Mai Otome / Hime, Tenchi Muyo, El Hazard, Astraea Testament, Nana, Paradise Kiss - to name a few. The first anime I ever saw was Galaxy Express 999, the TV series. It aired in Venezuala for years and in the early 90s, a friend of mine had brought a copy to the states. I then saw the usual ilk of the time (Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star) but it was Sailor Moon (yes, kiddy-stuff, even by Japanese standards) that really got me into anime and opened my whole eyes to the culture. That would have been in 1995.

I feel old -_-.

Thank you, Hikaru!

As someone who has been active in the anime convention community for years, I am glad to know not everyone is blind to this. It's only been recently that a lot of the convention staff are taking note of this and doing something about it. But I think if we want to preserve our fandom and keep it from becoming the medias best nightmare, we need to be proactive, or at least realize these things are going on.

I understand what you are saying and I agree with most of it. What you have described is the reason I will never go to another convention again. However having said that I fail to see the relationship with teenagers acting silly at a convention and a teacher bringing sexually explicit drawings to school and allowing, even if it was accidentally, underage students to view them. If a student had done the exact same thing I would be be even more degusted and would have liked to hear the parents explaination for their child have such things in their possession. Being a journalist who is allegedly aware of what anime is, I would hope that should you ever be reporting on a similar situation that your report will have made it clear that the media of anime has all types of genre from childrens titles to explicit pornography with a wide variety of family orientate productions in between just like any live action media. This would help to clear up the popular myths that it's either kiddy stuff, or kiddy porn with not much else in between.

That is one thing I hope never to come across with a teacher. Too bad for the kids; I guess it wasn't their lucky day. Now a few people are going to get nervous anytime anime/manga crops up. I would be too, if that was my first close encounter. Who brings that stuff to school anyway?!
