Violent responses to what are seen as corrupting cultural influences have been common occurrences throughout world history, after all. Besides, it isn't like the series prior to that point had played itself entirely for laughs, even though it is primarily a comedy. |
This was early on in Ep. 2, so I kept trying to shoehorn it into an X=Y allegory of Anime's acceptance in the west--
And didn't think it was so much the Usual Epic Fantasy power-battle, so much as the anime-illiterate West initially demonizing these "weird ultraviolent porno cartoons" that came from a country no one knew had an industry before now. As the earlier posted column emphasizes, old US grudges from Japan's "invading" 80's boom economy were still burning hot.
Yeah, I know, reading too much into it (but hey, ABC News acted like a royal racist jerk, back in the birth-of-anime 90's when Japan-phobic Jeff Greenfield was still contributing), and it's probably just Epic Fantasy Trope tripe. Still, it's nice to have a series where you can think it's trying to say something about the medium.

Episode 6
Meh i don't see why Shin just doesn't let them argue. You see in the world of otakus it's natural for this sort of thing to happen. I'd even go as far to say that it's a form of respect. Because you believe that the person you are arguing with is on the same level as you and actually WORTH having a discussion with. I'd say that their arguments have actually brought them closer together because before they wouldn't even SPIT in the direction of the other race yet alone talk to them about anything.
It's not exactly the friendly relationship you'd want to see obviously but there is no denying that there is a ever so slowly forming comradery between the two races.

Episode 6
Wow! That soccer match got really out of control, I don't think the game was made with Dwarves in mind, and trying to even it with magic made it into a full blown war. I think for a game to actually be fair with the races would be something that does not discriminate against team by race, kind of something that has teamwork. An idea that comes to mind is Pro-bending, something that has clear rules and positions.
I did find it really funny though, like how they actually did the crazy stuff they saw in manga and anime. Also Minori being really excited at seeing elves in uniforms, or having to get tackled for chasing after Elbia with a machine gun. And can't forget Garius taking a grain of rice off of Shinichi. Tried to figure out what the main dwarf guy's favourite series was in the eye catch, took me a little while to figure out it was referring to Rou-Kyu-Buu.
A little heart-warming when Miusel noticed that part of the reason Shinichi is trying so hard is because he wants to stop prejudice against people like Miusel. I like how Miusel and Petralka have are going too.
Also just figured out what the deal with the government guy is, he is trying to learn how to control them, that is why he chose of all things the anime culture. If the people became dependent on the culture, they would do what the Japanese government would want, also why he wanted to see the soccer match was to see what would happen.

BL vs Moe!
That was a fun argument.
Elbia really is a dog sometimes...
Elves vs Dwarves!
That was the best friendly match I've even seen!
Using magic made it even better.
Both sides wanted that prize badly.
Looks like the game was pretty contagious as well ^^

Yeah, couldn't have summarized this hilariously awesome episode better myself, though if I may, I should mention the first soccer ball explosion goal from the elves landing the dwarf goalie in a Yamcha position. Probably their most mainstream reference yet, and definitely one of my favorites.
Also, based on the preview for next week's show, Miusel may be heading to Japan sooner than we thought.

Dwara's favorite show is Ro-Kyu-Bu and Hinata is his favorite character. I think that's hilarious

Man, that Elbia sure knows how to handle balls. I may have missed it, but did we ever find out what was in the box that made Minori get a perverted fujoshi look in her eyes?

I would never have picked it two months ago but Outbreak Company is one of the best shows of the Fall season. It's very funny with lots of in-jokes, parodies and comical skits (and that dwarven girl was epic), but it also tells a touching story about getting along with others and accepting them no matter their race.

I assume it was the elves' uniforms since she was rooting for them and eye goggling over them.

I have to admit, that soccer game even blew me away with its intensity. I mean, that score and the way the elves + dwarves were going at it the whole time with magic and stuff.
Amazing no one during the match lol.

It took me until this episode to realize she WAS a dwarf--
After the revelation that 10-yo. dwarves already have beards, I was still going with Tolkien's theory that the females do too.

One of the dwarves in a previous episode mentioned about how all dwarven girls were eternal Lolis. I had a good laugh at how proud he was when he said that, as if that fact alone made dwarfs superior to other races.

One of my favorite things in the whole of anime is the hyperization (my word) of simple things, such as sports. Prince of Tennis' Dinosaur Shot, Takamura fighting the bear in Hajimi no Ippo and all of the taste reactions in Yakitake! Japan (not a sport show, but the same principle).
So I was pleased to see some of that here. That dragon shot was amazing and the war on the battlefield was spectacular. I love that it came to the point where Giant beings were being summoned and then swallowed by tremendous, mushroom-cloud explosions.
I know it's silly of me to read too deep into the sociology of this show, but...it leaves me wondering. If you introduce an outside culture into a deeply ingrained class / caste system, especially one as Monarchical as this, would it even be possible, in any amount of time, to put even a little wedge into the system?
Like, there's obviously a racial divide in this kingdom and the Japanese have come in and are the 'wedge'.
I'm rambling, but my overall question is would it be possible to force a change without serious repercussions? Would it just be better to let things lie and let said change come naturally (of course, we wouldn't have a show if Japan decided to do this).
