I thought your review was really fair. The artwork truly is amazing and at times it does indeed upstage the characters and the plot. Kaoru Mori's love for this historical setting and time really shines through. I really appreciate how Del Rey released it - even though A Bride's Story has its flaws - it certainly deserves the hardcover release.

I've only just started reading A Brides Story and I just want to say that the art is simply wonderful. I don't get impressed too often, but this is one of those times.

Wait wait, I missed a news bit or something- is Nodame Cantibile no longer going to be available in English?? Anime cry I apparently haven't been following manga news closely enough. If this is the case, I am an extremely sad panda!!

I can't agree more with this statement. Refreshing is the perfect word.

It's actually Yen Press that is releasing Bride's Story. And it was CMX that released Emma/Shirly ... Del Ray really had nothing to do with Mori's work.

It has been several years since a volume of Nodame Cantabile has been offered for sale. I am on good terms with my local comic shop, and I check up on that title every 6 months or so. Apparently NC just wasn't a very good seller. It is POSSIBLE that Kodansha could continue with the release, but unlikely at this point. It is to weep. Crying or Very sad

Afterschool Charisma isn't exactly great is it? I'm getting the feeling that I'm only following and buying it because it's VIZ Signature and it's mildly entertaining (kind of loving Saturn Apartments way more at the moment though). Well it IS mildly entertaining and gotta support the seinen series coming out!

Thanks to furigana I managed to slowly make my way through Del Rey's preview of Arisa 2 and it was very very obvious that the author was trying to make it look like Manabe (or whatever his name is) was the King, yet as the reader, it was very very very obvious that he is not. Well, it's seems pretty intriguing so I'm looking forward to picking up volume 2.

Can't wait for my copies of Blue Exorcist 1 and 2 to arrive in the mail, no matter the review =D

Woodcarving porn?! O_o I'm...curious now =P Well, I was planning to pick up A Bride's Story eventually anyway so just gotta be patient... Anime smile

While I'm sure Gentlmen's Alliance Cross has a lovely story, I found it completely unreadable due to the artwork. Yes, it's drawn well, but I don't want to have to keep stopping and going "Wait, WHO is this character?" I could barely tell anyone apart from anyone else. And that, my friends, is a problem in sequential art. Which is a shame, because I enjoyed Full Moon wo Sagashite.

but in what and why eactly?..
for example, FMA plot is indeed strained and artificial with its goal to have everything to have with at one point, in one battle (which itself would be all right if the plot about heroes getting there was believable)...
looks like fair review...

Well, there are two main ones that I remember.

(1) They translate "harisen-sensei" as "pufferfish sensei" and even have a note in the back speculating that it's because of his personality -- but he is holding a harisen (a paper fan) in the very same panel that they refer to! How do you miss that?

(2) This one is less obvious, and you have to have heard the original Japanese to notice it. Chiaki's ex-girlfriend, whose name escapes me right now, calls him a "loser," which in Japanese is makeinu, literally "losing dog." They translate it as "loser." Chiaki replies back that she's a mesu makeinu, literally "female losing dog." They translate this as "bitch." It doesn't capture the original pun, and worse, it has Chiaki saying something far crueler and misogynistic than his original statement. Matt Thorn offered a better translation as "losette."

There were probably others, but it's been several years since I read it, got frustrated, threw it against the wall, and decided I'd buy it in Japanese when I got the opportunity. Other people have found similar problems. Del Rey's translation of Nodame was pretty dreadful, at least at the outset.

A Bride's Story really caught my eye. I saw this listed on Right Stuf (I believe). The cover looked beautiful, but the description left me cold. However, after reading a better explanation, I think I will pick up the first copy at least. As an artist myself (yeah, right...Rolling Eyes) I love to see and appreciate someone else's drawings. And as far as manga art goes, I don't like most of it. Or, I find a lot of it to be done in similar styles (but that could be because I gravitate to shojo titles).

And speaking of shojo, I already wanted to read Gentleman's Alliance Cross. I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle the multiple characters all at once (or if I'll be able to tell them apart). But, I'm willing to weather that for the drama and pretty boys. Smile
