The k-on! movie was only 2 years ago.

Either way, even with if it is adjusted for inflation, the madoka movie will no doubt beat k-on!(its already really close to 2.000.000.000 yen).

They're both fantastic movies so I don't know whether I should be happy or sad.

Be happy for them both.

K-ON was just a side-story fun thing whereas from what I've heard Madoka 3 is a sequel that continues where the series (and compilation movies) left off. Given how much more BluRay sales the Madoka TV series had than K-ON already I'm somewhat surprised it took this long to top K-ON's box office total given the similar number of screen showings.

Even if you weren't a fan of what happened in the film, the film itself was still very well crafted.

Ticket prices for movies in Japan have stayed the same for around 15 years now (that will be changing soon with a slight increase).
