Sorry but Macs, and to a lesser extent Linux, do matter at retail. More and more companies are realizing this. I just took the ANN poll on online movie services and had to answer "Unpackaged Media is awesome, but none of the above services for anime is the least bit enticing." because none of them support the Mac OS. Why do these companies feel the need to create their own, crappy, bug ridden, poor quality, too expensive attempts at a service that has a well run, content full, well priced, high quality version already out there. Apple has shown that their ideas work, regardless of platform, form the majority of people. Movies are now available through iTunes and when you see January's announcement linking your computer, TV and iTunes along with hard drive space and programability that puts Tivo to shame you will understand why even Wal Mart is afraid of what Apple has in store for us.

Stop trying to re invent the wheel and join in the Apple program that has proven that everyone wins.

It's not that Mac (or Linux) is going to be the tipping point.

iTunes is a perfect example. Originally, Apple planned on keeping the iTunes program "Mac only." The idea was to force consumers to switch to a Mac platform to use the iPod. However, when third party companies started making programs that could interface with the iPod that worked for the PC that didn't have the "restrictions" that iTunes had, Apple quickly released a PC version, released it for free - and ramped up their development of the online music store. In other words, Apple had to work quickly to head off losing a very large customer base off at the pass.

It's all about pricing and freedom of product - as well as easy access and hardware compatibility in easy-to-find (read larger retail outlets) stores for cheap.

It is the reason why the .mp3 format is still the standard for audio players despite the fact that formats like .FLAC, .AAC, .APE, .OGG, .WMA, etc. are available - and some are "superior" to the .mp3.

For video, most people don't really care what "format" the video is in, just as long as:

- They can play it on their computer or set-top box WITHOUT having to connect to some site to "get permission" - and each time - to do so;

- They can convert it (or have access to a version) to play on a PSP, iPod Video, Zen Vision/M, etc., or as a (Heaven forbid) DVD without using a million different programs - or having to look over their own shoulders as they "break the law" - to do so, and;

- The files can be archived onto another medium (CD/DVD/Hard Disk/Memory Card/etc) without having to worry about having to jump through hoops to get a "license" to have the files play if/when the computer that holds them goes poof.

This is the primary reason why new services never really get off of the ground - high price, "questionable" quality, limited selection, and too many cumbersome restrictions on format. Lots of online music stores (like the ones many record labels tried before latching on to iTunes) failed using this approach. The lessons are never learned, it seems, and people make the same mistakes over and over because they don't seem to follow the above steps needed. And this has been the case for more than 10 years (around the time that .mp3 exploded as an audio format).

Live and learn. Or not.
