Not to mention nobody expected Western cartoon watchers back in the day to see the original Japanese version of Sailor Moon and find out that Luna was supposed to sound like a young girl. Wink

It took me a few days to get over the excitement of that announcement...still so happy that we're finally going to see Sailor Moon as it was meant to be seen!

In case no one has noticed yet, Canada has been uncharacteristically excluded from this party so far. Viz said that it acquired an exclusive licence to distribute Sailor Moon in North America, so then why would it turn around and make it available to the US only? This is nonsensical, and AFAIAC, it's depressing (I live in Canada).

I was curious about the old dub and looked up a few of the first episodes (having never really seen any of Sailor Moon before, though I'd heard a lot about it) - while I could see how it would've become a guilty pleasure if I'd taken up watching it back when it was on Toonami (hell, I might've started really getting into it; I mean, it was that way with me and Hamtaro) I can definitely see how flawed it is today. Can't wait to see how this new dub turns out.

As far as the voice at the end of the teaser, it definitely sounds like Stephanie Sheh's (I'm definitely hearing a lot of Orihime in that voice), but single lines from a clip can be misleading, so while I'm confident that it sounds like her voice, I won't feel sure that it's actually her until Viz releases the dub cast, haha

The first season was very primitive, and VERY much intended to be a little girl's show.
The characters are cute, but the show doesn't really find its later groove until halfway through the R (second) season. And by the time it starts the S (third) season, the mix of cute/crazy characters and dark story arc becomes more addictive than...well, consider whose avatar I'm telling this to. Razz

In the meantime, it's a lot easier to see the appeal of the characters on the original sub, now streaming on Viz's site.

IIRC, it's usually when Sailor Moon gets her friends when the SM dub caught on with people back then. Before that, Sailor Moon by herself couldn't sustain it.

Which, IIARC, won't be until next Monday on the streaming subs, when Ami shows up, and Rei a few episodes after that. Jupiter doesn't show up until the "second season" of the first season, and Venus not until the last few episodes.

(Also, the idea that those red hair-bun ornaments were actually speakers to turn her crybaby wailing into a powerful sonic weapon never got much further than the first episode. Never gets mentioned again until once in the SuperS series.)

In this day and age, there would be a merchandising opportunity there, marketing a portable bluetooth speaker based on those.

Viz has stated they will have a Neon Alley solution for Canadians "soon":

Nelson, I can sympathize with you on this considering that Sailor Moon's popularity in Canada predates the U.S. by a good three years. In fact, the show was arguably more popular in Canada than the U.S. and old YTV hosts like Stephanie Beard (yes, THAT Stephanie Beard and Phil Guerrero) would acknowledge this. Hell, Sailor Moon arguably started the whole anime fandom in Canada. It means that much to us up here.

Unfortunately, this is 2014, not 1995 and the business rules state that the U.S. fandom gets first dibs. Confused
