Haha, oh wow, One Piece wasn't on that list. Absolutely hillarious!
There's some Japanese demographic changes that can explain that (according to people I've spoken to currently living there). Basically put, Japan is become like America where people are starting to typecast anime/cartoons as "children's fare" and are getting addicted on reality television/game shows. Most likely, if this is indeed a "mainstream" poll, the older responents were more positive toward the shows they enjoyed in their youth; they're not voting for newer stuff since they see anime as an important part of childhood (and, as such, do not watch animated productions anymore). This is related to the rotation of anime out of primetime television slots of networks like Fuji and the rotation in of variety shows. |

| Glad to see Nausicaa on both lists. I was suprised to see Death Note on the list. I knew it was popular but not that popular. I was also suprised at JoJo's Bizarre Adventure making #2. I didn't realize JoJo was that popular. | ||||

Frankly, I think this list is biased, since Kochikame and Detective Conan are ENORMUS properties and I *know* Jojo only appealed to shounen audience, rather than a general one. The reasons for Jojo being the "dark horse" is that America is that it isn't very well known. Frankly, the only promotion I've ever seen in my life for Jojo were, 1. When I attended a "convention" in San Fransisco and the dubbing group for the anime held a lecture on professional voice acting. 2. Word-of-mouth on the internet. Not even the *manga* is promoted very well; Jojo's a fun/thrilling series, comparable in atmospheric darkness to Berserk, so I'm not sure why few are willing to hype it. |

Not in the slightest. Had Evangelion not been first, I would have been blown away. Anyway, why is Slam Dunk so high? Jeez...And I don't like how Jojo looks. ^^;; Hmmm...Where are Naruto, Bleach, and the other shounen titles if Slam Dunk is at number one? |

Why should it be surprising that probably the most talked-about anime series ever would come out #1? Although Gainax's marketing tactics boarder on the excessive, they have done a great job of keeping the title in the public (and by this I mean "otaku," since this looks like the results of an otaku-oriented poll) consciousness for more than a decade - a rare feat for a franchise that hasn't had any genuinely new content in more than nine years in an immensely crowded field. And, well, a lot of people do think it's one of the all-time-great anime series. Except for Mushishi (which I'm just not familiar with), none of the top ten anime surprised me, nor did it surprise me that Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya was #1 on write-in votes. What did surprise me was that Twelve Kingdoms was #3 and Planetes was #4 (and #8 on the write-ins for manga). Both are great series, but I didn't think they'd had that degree of enduring popularity. |

Well it has been running for 88 volumes(and still going), so it shouldn't be that much of a surpise that it is as popular as it is in Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/ Last edited by Mokkori on Wed Oct 04, 2006 4:25 pm; edited 2 times in total |

I'll bite and do the anime one. Due to my limited Kanji, there's one or two holes someone can fill in for me. Someone else can do the manga. :p Note: when they say "series" they mean "franchise". 11. Dragonball series 12. Princess Mononoke 13. Akira 14. Spirited Away 15. Doraemon 16. Full Metal Alchemist movie 17. Porco Rosso 18. Legend of Galactic Heroes (thanks HooliganJ) 19. Crayon Shin-chan 2001 movie: The Adult Empire Strikes Back 20. MS Gundam: Char's Counterattack 21. CardCaptor Sakura 22. Kamichu! (tie) 22. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (tie) 24. Patlabor Movie 2 25. Zeta Gundam 26. Voice of a Distant Star 27. Patlabor (the series) 28. Galaxy Express 999 29. Nadia 30. Manga Tales of Olden Japan (Manga Nihon Mukashi Banashi) 31. Crayon Shin-chan 2002 Movie: Arashu no Yobu Appare! Sengoku Daikassen 32. Grave of the Fireflies 33. Detective Conan 34. Howl's Moving Castle 35. Space Cruiser Yamato (Star Blazers) series 36. Wings of Honneamise 37. Slam Dunk 38. Sailor Moon series 39. MS Gundam Seed (tie) 39. Keroro Gunso (tie) 41. Gunbuster 42. Another Doraemon series 43. Kochikame series 44. Cowboy Bebop 45. Samurai 7 46. Martian Successor Nadesico 47. Heidi, Girl of the Alps 48. Urusei Yatsura 49. Astroboy 50. Lupin III First TV Series Last edited by jsevakis on Wed Oct 04, 2006 5:10 pm; edited 4 times in total |

I think it was the first major sports manga. Basketball was virtually introduced to Japan through SD, whereas prior to SD's debut it didn't exist (pity on the plagiarism!). |

I knew it was long, but I still would have thought it would have ranked a bit lower (in the #5-7 range). Just because something is long, doesn't mean it is more popular than other things, just popular enough to keep going. It doesn't mean people don't like other things more. I'm impressed that Kamichu! and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya tied for #22. Mushishi (#6) and FullMetal Alchemist (#9 for TV, #16 for the movie) are the only other recent (i.e. within the last year or two) anime that rated higher, and the next highest recent series is Keroro Gunso (tied for #39). As far as I can tell, the only other anime on the list that were made later than 2004, are Samurai 7 (#45) and Howl's Moving Castle (#34). |

I could tackle the manga list if I find some time, but for now I just wanted to fill in the hole at 18 - Legend of the Galactic Heroes. |

| Pretty unsuprising. I think it should be noted that the actual Media Arts Awards that judges vote on are quite diffrent; of those manga in the top ten only Mushishi had won an Exellence prize, though if they were released today I could see Phoenix and Nausicaa both winning the Grand Prize. | ||||
