A sampling of a few FUNimation licensing announcements and release dates:
Negima -- announced 10-30-05, 1st DVD 8-01-06
Tsubasa Chronicle -- 1-16-06, ??? (2.5 months apart, not exactly "within a few weeks of each other")
Speed Grapher -- 6-19-05, 7-04-06

You have to give Funimation a break here with Speed Grapher. Don't forget that they spent most of that time attempting to get the rights to Duran Duran "Girls on Film" so more then likely this title could of been out a lot earlier then 7-04. And more then likely it probably delayed some other releases....

I think Funi just followed their own procedures by sending those C&D letters. Probably stock letters so they appear rather chilling at first glance. However, it's just a request in legalese to end distribution, it's not a court summons. Rude perhaps but anime licensors have no particular reason to appear as if they condone fansubbing.

Sucks about Mushishi but I'm 99% certain some previously unknown group suddenly appears and fansubs the last episode.

You know, I totally forgot about the Girls on Film bit, but it definitely makes sense. Honestly, I was picking out some random FUNi titles that came to my head, and Speed Grapher happened to be one of them. Even without the music quibbling, I wouldn't really consider 13 months to be unreasonably long, though it helps that I don't really care to see SG, ever. But kudos to FUNi for at least trying to get the song at a reasonable price, and too bad it didn't work out for them.
